Change Default Home Page in Safari for Windows

It’s a pity that the people who write browsers don’t set the default home page to something useful. This is how you change the default homepage from Apple to one of your choosing in Safari for Windows.

Click on Edit then choose Preferences

Here you can change the default homepage from Apple’s default.  Just clear out the address in the Home page box.

If you want to set the current page you are viewing as your default homepage click on the button Set to Current Page.  You will get a confirmation screen.  Click the Change Home Page button.

Every time I try this, it works okay. I hit Ctrl+Shift+H and it goes to the correct home page. BUT, every time I close and re-open Safari, it is back to

Very annoying. Is there a way to fix this?

Matthew, I am having the same problem. I am really enjoying the look and feel of Safari, but my homepage and preferences default back to the original default settings when I exit and restart.

    Matthew and Will,

I have tried to recreate the issue your having with Safari and I am not able to. I guess I would check to make sure you have the latest version which is 3.0.1 (522.12.2)

You can check your version by clicking on Help and selecting “about Safari”

**Also! Make sure your not clicking the button below where your enter your homepage! That will only set your homepage to whatever site your on. You just type in the page you want then exit out of the window.

    I do have 3.0.1 (522.12.2)

I have the latest.. I uninstalled the first that was on there (then went in and made sure all the application data was removed from my profile also) then reinstalled the latest just yesterday.

I make other changes in preferences also.. not just the homepage.. ALL of the changes I make default back to the original settings once the browser has been closed and reopened.

I looked at the preferences file in Documents and Settings/*profile*/Application Data/Apple Computer/Safari/preferences.plist and I don’t even see an option on those settings DETAILING a homepage.

If you open that file (i used wordpad) do you see a homepage setting listed?

very weird!! I know I am not alone with this issue though apparently.

I’m seeing the same problem with Safari not saving my home page setting or any other preferences I change. I’m running WinXP Pro SP2 with IE7.

  7. Matthew Hauck

Well, it is clear that this is not an individual problem, since many people are having it. Any suggestions How-To Geek?

I tried this on a computer at work with the same results. my home system, and the work system is XP PRO

I can confirm my experience that – Safari 3.0.1 for Windows does not save the custom preferences for later usage. I hope this bug will be fixed asap.

    Well, Safari for Windows is
still in beta so they haven’t
worked all the bugs out yet.

  11. Dennis

My Safari is currently suffering from amnesia as well. Safari starts with no toolbars at all and I have to keep on unhiding all the toolbars each time I open a window. I hope this can be fixed soon.

Here’s the weird thing — Safari on my Windows XP has worked super fine for 3+ months…. and now all of a sudden in the last 24h, it has the bug as described in this thread — can’t save homepages, and other annoying things (like displaying the bookmarks toolbar) resets to off everytime I close/open.

Back to Windows Explorer I guess grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

I got mine to stick once, and I even still have 2.0.4. Sadly, I don’t know how I did it. After about six months, it went back to Apple’s homepage again and I have not been able to keep the changes again.

Hmm, I am suddenly getting similar problems using Safari 3.0.4 on a MacBook running OS10.4.11, except that my homepage APPEARS to be saved correcly, but the computer just can’t find it & heads off to or on the net and does a search. Even after closing such windows, the browser repeats the searches periodically.

what ya doing wrong is closing the the preferences.

hit another tab and you will get the confirmation to change the homepage,

    Then close it and restart

when I hit edit, there’s no preference selection…what I want to do is get my old dell start page back. It is now full of all sorts of things—which I try to x off but the next time I try the start page again, all of these things I don’t want are there

I’m very new to using Safari – Am I missing something? – Where is the “Home Page” icon in the toolbar?

  18. Sunj

Thanks! That worked, and when I close and open the Safari, it is still the hompage I want! Awesome!

  22. Paula

I downloaded the safari 5.1 on my iPhone but do not know where to go to set as home page

  23. Lorna Morrison

    OK ,
    1. Open safari on a page you want to be the startup page
    2. On the top right beside the address are two icons, a folder down page and a round “star”…
    3. Click on that and go down to preferences
4.Click on set to current page…… it will ask if you really want to do that.
