How-To Geek

Today is 10/10/10 – the Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything

Today is 10/10/10, but it’s even more than that. Today is the answer to life, the universe, and everything. How? Keep reading.

How Does 10/10/10 Equal 42?

If you pop open your calculator, put it into Programmer mode, click the Binary button, and then type in 101010, you’ll see that flipping to Decimal mode shows you 42 instead.

And of course, if you actually learn how the Binary numeral system works, you’ll earn some geek points.

Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything     image

In the science fiction novel (and movie) The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, there’s a giant computer that’s trying to figure out the ultimate answer to the ultimate questions in the universe—here’s the quote from Wikipedia:

a group of hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings demand to learn the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe, and Everything from the supercomputer, Deep Thought, specially built for this purpose. It takes Deep Thought 7½ million years to compute and check the answer, which turns out to be 42. Unfortunately, The Ultimate Question itself is unknown.

In fact, if you search Google for “answer to life the universe and everything”, it will spit out 42, in a lot less than 7.5 million years, of course.

Isn’t Pointless Geek Knowledge Fun?

Of course, this is all quite silly, but it’s fun to learn the background behind some of these things.

And don’t forget, this morning at 10:10 and 10 seconds, it will be 10/10/10 – 10:10:10, the only time that will happen for another 100 years.

Of course, as Radman in the comments points out, it’ll actually happen tonight at 10:10:10 as well.

Ubuntu 10.10 releases today. Coincidence? I think not.

“And don’t forget, this morning at 10:10 and 10 seconds, it will be 10/10/10 – 10:10:10, the only time that will happen for another 100 years.”

But next year we will have 11:11:11 and 11 seconds.

  2. Merlin

and in 10 days we will have 20:10 on 20/10/2010…

  3. Jet

I was going to congratulate “the geek” for making my reading so cool and fun with his everyday-articles, but then I read the comments on this one, and thought: YOU ARE ALL A BUNCH OF GEEKS! and, guess what? SO AM I!

I don’t know about the answer to life, the universe and everything, but I thank you all for showing me this today, 10-10-10: I’m a geek; we’re all geeks; it’s so cool to be a geek!

  8. Cariss4lolvery

  10. Rhhh4

When i found out (about 5 months ago), I got freaked out.

I’ve been waiting for this day for so long, I’ve also been freaking my friends out, saying that today would be the end.

“And don’t forget, this morning at 10:10 and 10 seconds, it will be 10/10/10 – 10:10:10, the only time that will happen for another 100 years.”

Actually it will happen again in 12 hours, tonight at 10:10 and 10 seconds.

  12. 42

    Win for Radman.

  13. The Geek

    You win. I lose. =)

  18. NP

And tomorrow it will be 10/11/10 – the only day that will happen for another 100 years. Then then it will be 10/12/10 – the only day that will happen for another 100 years.

  19. nan47

Thank you for answering my question. Guess I’m a closet geek — laid awake wondering about 101010 and where to find the answer.

  20. Mike

Radman you are a complete dumb fuck, in 12 hours it will be 2210, WTF? Were you a retatded baby with micro genital problems? Just wondeing cause you obviously are a complete dumbass! I take shits smarter than you.

  21. drb

10-10-2010, numerologically equals 5, binary = 42 ?, in numerology it would equal 6, anyway have a great day :)

  22. Mike

sorry guys, I just spent the last 20 mins pushing out somthing that was 35% smarter than Radman. Then I flushed it. It was that worthless…..

  23. wjkolar

    Isn’t Mike the clever one!
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Moron may refer to

    * Moron (psychology), disused term for a person with a mental age between 8 and 12, and a common insult for a person considered stupid (or just a generic insult)
    * Moron (bacteriophage), an extra gene in prophage genomes that do not have a phage function in the lysogenic cycle
    * Moron (Book of Mormon), a character and a location in the Book of Mormon
I’m guessing Mike is definition #2

  24. dumbyell

I’d rather be moron than more-off.

When yahoo decided to erase my e-mail address,(I went for almost a year believing that that was what had happened to it) I got tiktoff at them, I think 33 other people did to.You see I can never be a true geek (I,m too old for one thing) and too slow at technology for another. Thats why I have this site coming to my e-mail; sometimes you guysngirls actually say something I can follow. I know it would bore you all to say simplistic things to folks, but you could get a merit badge in kindness if you would put some simple tips in here sometimes, sortof a dumbdowners column. let me explain how bad it is out here. I bought a laptop without any schooling, I went two long years unable to even throw out a program because noone let me know that user account really means administrator!WTF! I caught on to the spacebar (I have a space in my two word password) issue keeping me out of yahoo mail one day. But by then the mail was too old for me to care anymore. See what I mean? simple obvious things to you are like water to a drowning old geezer like me.

  26. Smahlatz

    Today doesn’t equal 42, it equals 33! 42 day was on 11/01/10.

See the question was 6*9=?, and indeed, it equals 42 – in base 13.

So converting 42 (base13) to binary, we get 110110.

  27. Cornflake Couture

Woah- kerb the assertive aggression geeks!!

Actually if you want to be pendantic, at ten past 8 this evening it was 20:10 10/10/2010 (how cool huh :)

I guess we only have another 2 years of this 11/11/11 and 12/12/12 :(

  28. Cornflake Couture

P.S I made minty binary today too :) I’m hoping for extra geek points clearly :)

  29. Mina

I wonder if Rush is going to release 2012 in 2012…

  30. Quoc Huy

In 2 years it will be the last year this kind of date will happen until next century: 121212 cuz there won’t be any 131313 and so on. But no binary though…

  31. Markus Buergi

Sad to realize the aggression out there. It must reflect something inside the individual and the world around. Why not stopping it there?
However, isn’t there a point that 10/10/10 crosses many boundaries, for as a European I still feel that the mm/dd/yy system is way, I mean WAY out of any logical approach to the ‘ideal’ expression of a calendar date.
In the Far East where a sense for higher before lower is well established yy/mm/dd is the norm. How beautiful! Grew up with dd/mm/yy, go tell …
For short, UNIFICATION lies in the air, with some needed capitulations, or rather many, that must go along the way.
    Cheers to the Last Days.

Technical 10-10-10 will not occur again till Oct 10 3010 truly 101010

  33. wjkolar

Technically 10-10-10 happened a little over 2000 years ago, and will never occur again in the Gregorian calendar.

  34. Stoyan Deckoff

Of course, as Radman in the comments points out, it’ll actually happen tonight at 10:10:10 as well.

Well, in UK and US only, not in the EU… We get it only once…
    Here it’s not 10/10/10 but 10/10/10 ;)

  35. Habo

    It was 1000 years ago: 1010-10-10 10:10:…
    So, wait until 101010-10-10 10:10:… :D

  36. Pooja

You know what? Today, that is 11/01/11- is the supposedly correct answer for life, the universe and everything :) – 54, 6 times 9.

  37. tex
