Voice over IP (VoIP)

Voice over IP is an umbrella term that refers to several modern telecommunication systems that encode and transmit traditional voice communications via the TCP/IP networking protocol–in essence, VoIP is telephone over the Internet.

Although originally the province of curious computer hobbyists and early adopters, improvements in both network speed and VoIP technology have contributed to the widespread popularity of VoIP systems like those provided by Skype and Google Voice.
