HTTP 401/403 Errors

401 Unauthorized and 403 Forbidden are two closely related HTTP status codes related to the server’s inability to give you the data you are requesting. When the web site you are visiting gives you a 401 error, it means that you have no properly authenticated yourself with the server’s security system in order to gain authorized access to the web page or data you wish to view. A 403 Forbidden error, by contrast, indicates that (authorized or not) you still do not have the proper access level for the material you wish to view.
