I've had a lot of computer problems over the years, but this one is just plain weird, to me. By the way, this my very first posting in your forums, and I wasn't exactly sure where to put a question dealing with defragmentation, but since I am using Vista, I decided to post it here. If I was wrong, I apologize, and please move it to the proper forum.
Up until yesterday, I NEVER had any problem with defragging my disk. Then I do my defragging yesterday and it simply will not defrag, not a single file! I thought it may be a problem with the defrag utility I use, Defraggler, so I downloaded two others to check it out. I DL Auslogics defrag, and the O&O defragger. Same thing, will not defrag.
One thing I did notice on the report afterward. It says "List of LOCKED FILES". Maybe that's the reason. I don't know much about defragging, but maybe because these files are 'locked', the utility cannot defrag them. The question in my mind is HOW did these files come to be locked. I certainly haven't done anything different lately to make them so. And if this is the problem, how do I go about UNLOCKING these files? I do use a System Restore(I don't like System Restore) utility called Rollback RX, which locks the snapshots it takes of my disk, and I made sure the disk was unlocked before I did the defrag.
So I decided to print here the report generated by O&O for your review. Maybe you can see what the problem may be and how to cure it. Thanks very much. Here is the report(notice it says the defrag files and degree of fragmentation are the SAME, before and after the defrag attempt):

Welcome jek1863, You might have a problem with your UAC settings. If after checking your settings and you are still having problems there are a couple of free programs that can correct this.

Hi John

Try deleting temp Internet files plus empty the recycle bin,

Pause your antivirus program Avira

Right click defrag and run as administrator

Or use Vista's own defrag program {all programs accessories system tools disc defragmenter}

Hi Guys-I've done everything you've told me. But when I go to defragment, ALL I get back are LOCKED FILES! Why is this? In that scan report I posted above, there were no unlocked files that were defragmented. I even have tried different defraggers with the same result. I've tried it in safe mode, too, same thing. I just don't understand why the defragging of my computer is suddenly all 'messed up'. Just a thought...could spyware, malware or a virus have caused this problem? I can't think of anything else that might cause this. I don't have a defragmentation 'problem', meaning my degree of fragmentation now is about only 2%. So this is not an emergency, just a big head scratcher. Please tell me any ideas you may have about what may be going on here. Thanks.

I had an idea. I had an old hard drive (20gb) lying around which I use for 'emergency purposes', and something interesting happened. When I ran the defrag, a whole new set of files appeared compared to what I got on the other hard drive. And they all defragged, there were no locked files! Interesting. But this may indicate, as you said, that since this hard drive seemed to work, my other one may be on its way out. At least I am glad I did the test. Give me your latest feedback based on what I have posted. Thanks.

What is the story with this Defragger on the system ????

Yes, I know I tried it. I understand O&O is supposed to be able to defrag locked files, but not in my case! And that troubles me. Why not?? It analyzed the system, but not a single file was defragged. Very disappointing. And I don't know of any other defraggers out there that also defrag locked files, so it is still a big mystery what is going on here.
I did a disk error check, and came up with something interesting, that might be a clue. It said "recovering orphan file" on several occasions. I've never seen that before on a chkdsk. Obviously, I would not have seen that if nothing was wrong.
As I said, the difference in files presented to be defragged from the two different hard drives as I described it above also may be a clue. But the bottom line is I am just getting locked files to defragment, and nothing is defragmenting as a result!! Very frustrating. I used the Unlocker utility and have tediously gone through the list, and am about 3/4 the way through deleting these files. I am very careful as to what I delete. It says no locking handle found, so I am forced to delete. I am looking for an unlocker that unlocks locked files with an unlocker feature, not just delete, rename, and move. I might just delete a locked file my system needs. If you know of one, please let me know. Because if I can unlock all of these locked files, and there are HUNDREDS of them, causing about a 3% defragmentation presently on my disk, then it should be no problem to defrag them, as they will now be all unlocked. Thanks for all your help.

You said you run a utility called "Rollback RX," can you uninstall it for a test to see if it frees up those files?
You mentioned you also ran a disk error check. did you run chkdsk /f, if not try tha.
Try renaming one of those locked files. (Say one of the .mp3 files to test.mp3) do you get any error message?
Edit: If still Having problems try defragging in safe mode after you run the chkdsk /f?

Also files will be locked if being used so if you try and defrag but your using the computer to listen to music and browse the web more files will be locked as there in use

OK, I have some new information that I think really will help a lot to get to the bottom of this continuing problem I am having. I downloaded a great utility called EMCO Unlock It. It helps you to unlock locked files, and will even tell you 'what' is causing a file to be locked. So I ran it against about 10 of the files, and ALL of them said "the selected resource is NOT locked by any application". I had been assuming all along these all were locked files, for all the defragmenters I have tried have been unable or refused to defrag these files. But they are NOT locked files, according to this utility, and I have no reason to believe otherwise. So going on that they are not locked files, they are unlocked files, WHY WHY WHY are these files not being defragmented??? I have tried about 5 different defragmenters, tried it in safe mode, as an administrator, and everything that has been suggested, but the files will simply not defragment, and I am at a complete loss to explain why. Also, when I do a scan with a defragmenter, ONLY these same files appear time after time...there are no other files presented that ARE defragmented, so this is really weird. And this problem just came out of the blue about a week or so ago. Before then, I had no problem with defragmentation. So I don't know what you all can suggest to me now, but now you know these are NOT locked files. At least I eliminated that.
Please give me your thoughts now, knowing these undefraggable files are not locked. Thanks.

move your .mp3's to a flash drive or another partition then defrag again. When finished move those mp3's back and run another defrag. I know defragging will not be 100% there will always be 1-3% fragmented when finished. Why those files?

PROBLEM SOLVED...HOORAY!! Thank you germ-x, you nailed it. I uninstalled that Rollback RX thing and now everything defrags. Come to think of it, I installed the utility just about the time I started having this defragging problem. I don't know if you know anything about Rollback RX, but it takes daily 'snapshots' of your computer, sort of like System Restore, but uses MUCH less disk space. That is why I liked it. The only thing it does which I didn't realize at the time would affect my defragging, was that it 'locks' the snapshots it takes. That must've been the reason it 'appeared' I was getting locked defrag files and all the problems I was having. I wanted something other than System Restore because of all the System Volume Information it produces and the amount it takes away from the disk. That is why I installed this Rollback RX, never for a moment thinking it would mess up my defragging? Why should it? But it did obviously, as uninstalling it fixed my defrag problem. All the files defragged, none were listed as locked, so I can say this problem has been solved!!
Now I have another question. I need another good alternative to System Restore(I refuse to use it). I need a utility I can download, other than Rollback RX, that will act like System Restore, but hopefully not take up so much space on my disk as it accumulates restore points. I need something I can backup my ENTIRE system to, in the event of an ermergency. Can you recommend any utilities I could try(freeware, please, if possible) to back up my system, superior to System Restore? This is what I need and want. And hopefully not something that will affect my defragging, as Rollback RX did. Thanks.
