hi

my pc suddenly stopped working. windows would start and get stuck on the green task bar screen and then just sit there indefinately.

i rebooted and pressed f2, and the pc started the windows memory diagnostic tool. after this i tried to start in safe mode and it crashes at 'windows\system32\drivers\crcdisk.sys'

the problem is, i got the pc from work as a refurbished unit and was not given a vista disc, so can not do a windows repair via cd. how can i get the pc to start as normal again?

i will read it but yes at a glance i think thats the idea :) hang on first ... go here http://www.partitionwizard.com/download.html download the boot-able cd home 5.2 version burn to disk , on power-up press F12 set boot to dvd 1st boot make sure the burnt partition wizard disk is in your cd- tray hit enter disk should boot , when you come to the 1-4 option screen select 1 enter you will then see the pw screen you should see your C\ drive can you see another D\ ? maybe

okay...here's what happened

i pressed f12 and got 2 options. hard disk and p1-astapi-dvd i think it said. so pressed enter, and it goes to a screen that says windows repair or start normally. repair option just refreshes the screen, start windows normally and it does the green task bar lock thing

however...i have managed to get a screen up which shows....

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safemode with comand prompt

enable boot logging
enable low res video
last know good configuration
directory services restore mode
debug mode
sidable auto restart on system failure
disable driver signature enforcement

start windows normally

@kriscadman,
did you try marks 1st suggestion ....
"upon re-booting, hit <Alt> + <F10>"
looks like that should get you to the recovery manager

you said you have cd inserted???
a bit confused - and i dont wanna hijack this thread.
you said you can access you bios - enter bios > make sure its set to boot from hard disc first & make sure that the setting for D2D Recovery is set to Enabled
remove whatever cd you have inserted and at the apprapriate time when the c omp is reastarting hit the <Alt> + <F10>

no, nothing like that.

it says phoenix awardbios cmos setup utility at the top. blue screen, yellow text

product info
standard cmos features
advance bios features
advanced chipset
intergrated peripherals
power management setup
etc etc

sorry if i'm being thick guys, trying to follow instructions on here and i'm not exactly a noob but still not a pc whizz!

yes that's correct.

it just goes straight back to the windows error recovery screen with launch startup repair and start windows normally.

you can hear the disc spooling up after this happens

did you download and burn the bootable cd image option they gave.
saw there was a few options...
i think what marks is getting at is to check to see weather you have the recovery partiton or not
if so - make sure youre set to boot from cd / dvd in bios as 1st option.

okay...downloaded the CORRECT iso.....burned to disc using windows (for now) and it still goes to the same screen. thats either using bios to boot from dvd or f12 to boot from dvd

rebooted, pressed f2 followed by f8 which gave me:

safe mode
safe mode with networking
safemode with comand prompt
enable boot logging
enable low res video

hit enter on safemode with command prompt and it started to load all the drivers......then it stopped again on windows/system32/drivers/crcdisk.sys

no other partitions - means you dont have the recovery partition we were hoiping to see - which might explain why you didnt see the "d2d" option in the bios.
last resort give this a try ....

yeah it was about a year ago, dont even think it was refurbished actually, think it was just superceded and work decided to let us have them for silly money. all my music and family videos and photo's are on there. stupid thing is i only moved all this over to this pc a few weeks ago when my portable hard drive started to make a funny noise!

okay, downloading the file now. do i just burn the image and boot from cd again?

thanks for your time guys, its really appreciated

reset to boot from dvd, let it run and load may take a bit of time when its loaded, i will try to find a guide to help you...here you go https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/13706/recover-deleted-files-on-an-ntfs-hard-drive-from-a-ubuntu-live-cd/

hope this helps im off to bed now its 0130 here in the uk if you have any problems post back , you need to remove all you need then re-load vista if you have the product key on a sticker on your machine ask someone you know with the same version borrow that activate with your product key or post back when your ready to reload :)
