I have a WNR2000 Wireless Router and I was wanting to know what is a WEP key and also known as a passphrase. So if guests came over I would have to type in my passphrase correct?? Then I noticed that I type my passphrase and I hit generate it has these keys like key 1-4. It has random numbers and everything. So what is all this. I know it is for security but if someone could answer my questions that would be great.

Some routers take a phrase and from that generate a string of hexidecimal numbers. Further, some will generate a set of hexidecimal numbers and you select the one you want to use.

So, if you want to connect another computer, you'd enter the same passphrase (it will always generate the same numbers but some network devices may not and you'd have to use the string of numbers).

See HERE for more info.
