As we know solid-state drive (SSD) using integrated circuit technology, no mechanical moving parts. It provides much higher physical performance, typically less susceptible to physical shock, low power consumption, no noise and has lower access time and latency. It considered being the best alternative drive of operating system. And, hardware price goes down every day, more and more people begin to use SSD drives. When you get a fresh SSD, how could you upgrade your hard disk to it? Reinstall your system, your applications? Although, most users recommend doing a fresh install on new SSD. Actually, you needn’t do that, through search Google, you could find there are two known software which could help you migrate your system to SSD easily. Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 2.0 and AOMEI Partition Assistant 5.0.

About Paragon Migrate OS to SSD 2.0
This software is an excellent system (or file) migration tool. It is the first software which supports migrating system or file to SSD or other larger disk.

Advantage of Paragon migrate OS to SSD 2.0
One-key operation, easy to use, only needs some mouse clicking then operation will be completed.
Support file migration, you could select the file in system partition which you want to migrate!
Support migrate system or data from MBR disk to GPT disk!
Support migrate data to virtual environment!

Disk advantage of Paragon migrate OS to SSD 2.0
It is not free software; you need to purchase it for $19.95.
Single function, you could only use it to move your file from one disk to another.

About AOMEI Partition Assistant 5.0
AOMEI Partition Assistant as professional partition manager software which integrate system migration feature in its latest upgrade edition, 5.0 versions.

Advantage of AOMEI Partition Assistant 5.0
The built-in “migrate system to SSD wizard” which could help you move system partition to SSD by mouse clicking!
Automatically aligns partitions on the destination disk during the operation
Support resizes the system partition on destination disk!
Support manages partition on destination disk, such as create/delete, merge/split, resize, clone partition and etc!
Free software!

Disadvantage of AOMEI Partition Assistant 5.0
Only support migrate partition, could not mange file like Paragon.
Only support migrate partition from MBR disk to MBR, GPT disk is not support.

From the information above, it is clearly that, to most common users if you only want to migrate your system partition to SSD, Partition Assistant 5.0 would be enough, however if you want to do some professional migration, Paragon Migrate tool is better.

How to use these system migration tools?
Through search GOOGLE you could find many tutorial about Paragon Migrate Tool, today I introduce you how to use Partition Assistant 5.0 to migrate system to SSD,

Install and launch Partition Assistant Home Edition 5.0

On the main console, click "Migrate OS to SSD or HDD", in the pop-up windows click "Next" to continue.

Then follow the wizard to complete the operation, the only things you need to do is select target disk, then click “Next”.

Tips: In the wizard there's one step that allows you resize the source partition size on the SSD. You could extend your system partition at the same time.

About turn on AHCI for SSD
Finally, no matter which tool you select to move your system to SSD, change your disk mode from IDE to Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) is an important step. However, if you change IDE to AHCI in Bios directly after installed OS, you will find you could not boot into your system. This is also another reason why peoples suggest reinstall OS. Do not worry; we could change something else in our “regedit” to avoid this problem.

1)Run the Registry Editor (regedit.exe)

2) Navigate to the location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Msahci

3) Set the "Start" value to 0 (zero)

4) Restart computer go into the BIOS-> configuration->change the disk mode to "AHCI" (IDE is set as default commonly ) . Save the new BIOS configuration and restart so that Windows boots.

When Windows starts, it will detect the change, load new disk drivers, and does one more reboot to start up with them.

5) Install the latest driver of your motherboard.

Note: This method only works in Windows 7, Windows XP could not support.
If your CPU is based on AMD platform, you need to do another step, download the “AMD RAIDXpert” from AMD official website, then log in it and turn on NCQ mode. This is important.
If your CPU is based on Intel platform, you need no to do this, the NCQ mode is turned on autonomic when you change ide to ahci and install the latest driver of motherboard.

Yes, fresh install seems well, partition migration is just a half-measures for the people who don't want to reinstall everything on new SSD.

My Intel came with a free Acronis version works on Intel only and it worked flawlessly. You have to follow links to their webpage and download it.

Clean install is much better agree

Yes, only Intel SSD offers a migrate tool for users to move data from source disk to SSD, other brand don't offers this, such as OCZ, kingston, SAMSUNG. If my ssd is not Intel, could I use the free Acronis version?

No when it started it searched for an Intel so don't think it will work with other's. Intel probably paying a divvy for that so I'd see why they wouldn't want to share.

I actually use paid version Acronis Home myself cause free macrium reflect don't do EFI PC except with their paid Pro version. I used Acronis first time with an ssd cause my bios was not ahci and a clean install crashed

This macrium reflect which was in another post just now https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/7363/macrium-reflect-is-a-free-and-easy-to-use-backup-utility/

I used free EaseUS ToDo Backup Ver 4.0 to move all, as in my OS and all my software installs, from my HDD to a new SSD without one hiccup. My new SSD looks, feels, tastes exactly like my old HDD. All in under one hour. I did it using a usb docking station, putting my new SSD in it, and cloning my HDD to my new SSD. Then I removed my old HDD, installed my new SSD and fired it up. Every so often I clone the SSD to the HDD, using the docking station, for backup.

I did not have to reinstall any of the software that I did havd to install when my computer was new. My Quicken financial program, AtomTime, Microsoft Office, Streets & Trips, Google Earth, Seamonkey and Firefox were all there on my new SSD just as if I had reinstall them after a fresh install of Win 7. All in less that 30 minutes; not all day as a fresh install would have taken.

For the life of me I cannot understand why so many insist on a complete reinstall of Win 7 and adding all the software again. That takes all day to do.

If I'm missing something here please let me know.

1 hour?
Acronis is 6 minutes to restore an image here but depends on your system

Fresh install depends on your system and your methods.
Clean OS install 15 mins, Install all my software completely fresh with all the settings backed up another 20 mins, maybe less now I don't put on MS office and use kingsoft

I do not recommend clone your HDD to SSD,
First, as we know clone hdd will clone everything, include the fragement, the bad sector, and other which will influence the performance of SSD.
Second, clone software would not align partition in 1024KB for SSD in Windows 7, this will make you ssd loss some performance.
Third, clone hard disk will take a longer time than migrate or fresh install everthing on SSD.

LH, this AOMEI looks like a decent program. Looks a bit like Partition Wizard. But I had never heard about it either. http://www.extend-partition.com/

whs. I did look at the site. Their English is not so hot :) And the free version does not align drives.

A while ago I had written a tutorial on how to install a SSD and transfer the OS. It may be useful for you to consult it.

LH. yeah, I saw that too. No alignment. But if you know that, it is a minor problem. Aligning a SSD is really SSD101.
