I wanted to make sure that everybody knows that we are switching to a new forum system called Discourse on April 2nd, as long as all goes as planned. I'll update everybody on Monday if anything changes, but as of right now, that's the plan.

The new forum is designed more for discussion than tech support - while there will certainly be plenty of people asking for help and plenty of you helping others, it's really meant to be more of a discussion area than just a tech support forum.

We will also be replacing the comments on the articles with this new forum.

The new system and rules will be a bit different - there are much better anti-spam controls built into Discourse, the system we are switching to, so we will be allowing people to link to things, and even mildly self promote things they have created as long as it's not actual spam. More to come on this topic later.

Discourse is an extremely modern piece of software. You can read more about it here: http://www.discourse.org/

There was much rejoicing.

It's certainly going to be strange having to tell someone that even though you may be able to help them unfortunately it can only be discussed. Very strange indeed.

I didn't mean that you can't help them. That's certainly a core part of the posts that come in.

What I meant is that it will be much more than just a tech support forum.

Starting fresh, prepare for server overload as everyone will want to be the first poster, or the highest poster blah blah.

The New Site is hard to envision so I think one will have to experience it first before commenting.

We'll just have to wait and see how it goes. :) :)

Rick, as far as I can see, it is very different to the common forum engines. Will be interesting.

The only thing that would concern me is the character count and whether or not there's a limit, otherwise we'll have to use text speak and I'm no fan of that.

Could also raise a few interesting ones with regional slang done in text speak, no one will know what the others saying...time to invent 'Text Esperanto'. :)

Well those who start Discoursing in "Texting Speak" will get NO answers from me.

I have enough trouble corresponding coherently in native correct English. (LOL) ....

No problem for the Builder Topics IF EVERY YONGSTER who doesn't know "Chile from China" don't jump in and
"muck up" the original OP's help question.

I come here for the very best tech support, not to chat.

That's because HTG forums has so many posts that can help people solve their PC problems...

I find it hilarious how many times you've said you refuse to use something like Twitter or Facebook... while most of the responses in this thread (and many others here) would fit into Twitter's 140 character limit.

That said, it's not at all like either of those. You can have extremely long posts, complete with images, embedded videos, and anything else you want.

Just go try it for yourself. There is a sandbox you can do anything you want with.

Sign up now to reserve your name? from the Discourse FAQ

Can I be the same user on all Discourse forums?
We do offer a preliminary but functional global nickname registration. If you want to be consistently known as @kittenbunny99 across all Discourse instances, you can. You'll also get a user page here that optionally lists all your forum memberships.

For now, sign up on meta and that will globally reserve your nickname for later use.

Not that I want to be KittenBunny99!!

Joe,

Go to the Meta at the top of the page : http://meta.discourse.org/t/ne.....se/5456/12 notice the difference in the link = meta ?

Rick,

They said the same about my Gravatar name, I think because it's somewhat linked to the discourse forum so it registers as taken ???

Edit : Go here Joe : http://meta.discourse.org/ log in there and you should be fine.

@ Rick,

Apparently you can't have animated Gif Avatars at present at least. : http://meta.discourse.org/t/au.....res/1127/3

Ok it's technically about signatures but I don't think the settings allow for it.

@GS,

I figured that if could shrink the size of my animated Gif to 25Px by 25Px then the Gif would animate automatically as there would be no cropping needed when posted.

Still working on the issue but might not be possible as you said.

This looks like it may be a positive step forward. (At least the forum isn't switching to Facebook log-ins.) However, I hope the "tech-help" feel of this site isn't diminished.

Additionally, are the current posts going to be archived in any way? I have occasionally did a google search for a problem, and end up with the first result being somewhere in the HTG forums (and the solution ends up working for me).

Whs said not much for the social media. I agree with him, me either. The tech support should be the foremost object with social media as secondary. No one came to the HTG site just to socialize. Most had a tech problem that they wanted help with. I think that was provided and we'll see what happens tomorrow if help for them will still be available.

I wish you guys lots of luck with socializing. Maybe I meet you one day on a technical forum again. It was fun to be here during 17.500+ posts. But everything comes to an end one day. One must not run after every trendy fashion.

WHS,

You not even going to give it a punt to see what it's like ?

Best to get first hand insight before any decisions are made, if I don't like it then I'll go somewhere else...maybe, if strangely enjoyable I may stick around.

And you did say yourself the forum should move forward with technology, well, it is.

GS,

Right, I had hoped the forum would adopt one of the engines that other technical forums have and relax some of the rules (e.g. that you can correct a posting forever).

After a while I will probably be checking on you guys from the outside. Maybe you are right and it is worth getting into the act again. We'll see.

I don't think there is a time limit on post editing unless the topic gets frozen for some reason, and as for the rules, I certainly didn't see any list of them.

Sure there is a time limit for editing a post - it is 30 minutes. Try to deal with that if you post e.g. tutorials that require constant updates. Another rule was that you cannot embed videos. Since I make a lot of video tutorials, that was not very handy.

It is not to be a social forum, I don't think. It is to combine the discussions of the "How to" pages now at the bottom of each page with the help forum. I am sure there will be plenty of "Categories" for both. I think it could be an improvement over what we are doing now in many ways. It will take some ad hoc leadership and I sure hope our big number posters stick around to help us "Get it Right".
