Whenever I type in 'regedit', I get this error msg 'C:\Windows\regedit incorrect function'
I am able to type in 'cmd' and I get the command line. Same with many programs
in the Start Menu.

from the command line, I went to C:\Windows\system32\regedit.exe , nothing..

What can I do to reset the linkfiles .lnk correctly now that I cannot accesss the registry editor?

if you are running windows regedit is located in the windows directory.
I don't think regedit is accessable from Unbuntu.

From the cmd prompt, copy regedit.exe from the XP Installer CD (in I386 folder) to your windows folder.
