Build a Geodesic Gingerbread House for Sci-Fi Holiday Cheer

By Jason Fitzpatrick on December 9th, 2011

If you’re looking to ad a bit more of a sci-fi twist to your holiday decorations this geodesic gingerbread house is more Moonbase Alpha than grandma’s cottage in the woods.

The product of design studio Scout Regalia, you can pick up the laser-cut gingerbread kit for $25.00 (includes support stand for the dome, templates, recipe, and assembly instructions). Check out the video of the build process:

While we love geeky entrepreneurship, this is the kind of thing that begs for some at home DIY fun. Laser cut cardboard aside you could easily make your own templates with a razor knife and a steady hand. In fact the idea of gingerbread geodesics goes all the way back to the 1980s (long before cheap laser cutters and internet video) when Mother Earth News published a guide to crafting geodesic gingerbread domes in their 1983 Christmas issue. Although the old 1980s guide is light on pictures it’s long on tips and tricks–definitely a recommended read if you’re planning on building a dome.
