Lytro Focus-Free Camera Features Post-Photo Focus Shifting

Earlier this year the internet was abuzz with the news of the Lytro Camera, a camera that allows you to focus the picture after you’d taken it. People were skeptical, but the camera has been seen in the wild.

Although review units aren’t shipping until next year, Mashable invited Lytro creator Ren Ng to their offices to try out the camera. You can see their in-office test here:

It’s pretty hard to see the focus-shifting he’s doing on that tiny little LCD screen, so here’s an example from the Lytro web page to play with. Click on any part of the image to shift the focus.

Hit up the link below to read more about the Lytro camera, play around in their image galleries, and even pre-order one.

Pure genius. Instead of wasting time and power trying to achieve focus, put everything in
focus and tweak it later! Sign me in!

That’s not how it works, Juan. Everything is not in focus, it just takes several images at one time using about five different lenses for five different focal points. The sofware then blends the different levels together via some clever, yet, simple code.

You could do a similar thing with the same software and simply several different exposures from a conventional camera. The only thing about this camera is it does it all at once so you don’t have to bother with a tripod. I’d bet this thing is only useful for select, planned shots, and not action or otherwise unplanned, careful shots, as I bet you get a lot of images with some odd focal points rather than the ones you’d prefer since there’s no real way to see until you take the shot.
