Super Pixel Bros is Minimal-Pixel Rendition of Super Mario Bros

By Jason Fitzpatrick on September 15th, 2011

Super Pixel Bros is a fantastically retro re-imagining of the original Super Mario Bros game on an 8×8 LED grid–every game element is reduced to a single pixel.

Super Pixel Bros is the brainchild of Brad Slattery, an electronics enthusiast and Super Mario Bros fan. Brad didn’t execute his vision of a reductionist Super Mario Bros. game by whipping up a flash game to demonstrate the concept. He designed and built an entire portable console including the screen, button layout, and the code that drives it all. The result is a pretty awesome retro game; watch the above video to see it in action.

Currently his projects page has the source code, the PCB templates, and everything you need to recreate Super Pixel Bros on your own. The skill factor on this project is high (once you order all his parts, including the pre-fabbed Super Pixel Bros board) you’ll still need to do some fairly skilled surface mounting so this project is best for those with ninja-level soldering skills.

If it can be modded, optimized, repurposed, or torn apart for fun he's interested (and probably already at the workbench taking it apart). You can follow him on if you'd like.
