Modified Counter Bell Adds Old-Fashion Notifications to Your Computer [Video]

There’s no need to settle for electronic beeps and dings when DIY mods like this one exist; hack an old-fashioned counter service bell to notify you of new emails and more.

New emails, instant messages, twitter mentions: whatever interests you this bell and the accompanying electronics project can be modified to suit. You’ll need to be handy with a soldering iron for some basic soldering and basic programming–if you want to customize the bell to provide alerts for things besides email which the default code provides for. Watch the video below to see it in action:

Email Notification Bell [Instructables via Hack A Day]

Jason Fitzpatrick is a warranty-voiding DIYer who spends his days cracking opening cases and wrestling with code so you don't have to. If it can be modded, optimized, repurposed, or torn apart for fun he's interested (and probably already at the workbench taking it apart). You can follow him on if you'd like.

I’d like to see that work in the opposite direction.
Notify the computer whenever someone hits the bell for service.

LOL @Alan Bush, Then that anxious customer who just rings the bell 100 times per minute would crash your computer.
