Hack a Crock Pot into a Sous Vide Cooker

Sous vide cookers are an awesome way to precisely cook food but they cost a fortune. This DIY solution gives you sous vide flavor without a hit to your wallet.

Sous vide, for the unfamiliar, is a process of cooking food in water at precisely controlled temperatures. For example, you can cook a steak by putting it in a vacuum-sealed plastic bag and then cooking it to the exact temperature you want. You’ll never have an undercooked or overcooked steak again. In the above video Jeff Porter, author of the book Cooking for Geeks, shows how you can hack a cheap crock pot into a sous vide cooker.

Looks like a good way to get electrocuted or burn down the kitchen.

@Big_Deal Totally! I don’t think those types of extension cords are rated for that, and at least hook everything up to a GFCI.

  3. What??

    How is this sous-vide?

  4. ExTexan

Some brand names for the cooker and a source for the regulater would be nice, doncha think?

45 minutes to cook eggs !

The description of the type of thermocouple needed or where you get it from , and the range , and what about the sensor prong, ” as this guy over here ” is about as useful as a chocolate teapot!

I think that most of the authors making negative comments are missing the real point… this device might be potentially useful to some, it seems to me that this is a springboard for “out of the box” thinking… What else could you do, what could this be modified to do, does this give you any ideas about solving other interesting challenges?

What other creative projects could one put together from the baseline ideas inspired by the creator of this project.

At least from my point of view, keep on creating…

Steve D, your on to it. Im not a cook but REAL chiefs are food scientists. I wouldn’t trust the critics with MY computer; they would cook the wiring and expect me to eat the results. Fine cooking IS a science and these critics are like those that serve up software with a half baked concept. Yep we ALL jump on them.
Wake up and smell the REAL Laté guy. Or is it more ‘instant’ for you?

Not sure how to read this, but I am 100% non-“instant” — to me, that’s just a warm drink. It’s either Peet’s or Starbuck’s, always black.
