The Prospector – Home Dash Extension Creates a Whole New Browsing Experience in Firefox

Would you like to try a different kind of browsing experience while using Firefox? With the Prospector – Home Dash extension from Mozilla Labs you get a mix of the traditional UI, full-screen mode, and a mobile-style interface all combined together.

To access the Home Dash UI while in “browsing mode” click on the Home Dash Icon in the upper left corner. Use the keyboard shortcut “Alt + Ctrl + Shift + D” to switch back and forth between the normal and Home Dash UIs.

Note: You may or may not experience some “blank tab thumbnails” while using the extension as shown in our screenshot above. The extension is still in the early development stages so your mileage may vary on this particular issue.

Hovering your mouse over a tab thumbnail will display a preview of the page on the right 2/3 of the browser window.

Here is how your browser window will look while you are viewing a particular page. Notice the transparent Home Dash Icon is still visible in the upper left corner.

Prospector – Home Dash favors those who prefer using keyboard shortcuts to do their online browsing. Here is a quick look at the keyboard shortcuts available:

We included screenshots of the keyboard shortcuts for viewing convenience but you can easily copy and paste the tabled lists from the blog post listed below (Tips and Troubleshooting…) to print out your own complete list.

Prospector – Home Dash provides an alternative option for people who do not care for the traditional UI layout/style of Firefox while browsing. So if this sounds like you (or if you are just curious) then grab a copy of the extension and have fun!

Note: There are two things to keep in mind with this extension: 1.) It only works with Firefox 4.0 beta 9 or above & 2.) The extension will most likely cause Firefox to be CPU intensive (generally 15% – 26% on our system).
