Pinta is a Cross-Platform Paint.NET Clone

Are you a frequent user of Paint.NET but feel frustrated that it is limited to Windows only? Fret no more because now you can get similar functionality on multiple platforms with Pinta.

Here is what you get with Pinta:

  • Drawing Tools: Pinta includes a wide array of common tools like Paintbrush, Pencil, Shapes, Eraser, and Selections.
  • Multiple Layers: Pinta supports unlimited layers.
  • Full History: Pinta provides unlimited levels of Undo/Redo.
  • Adjustments and Effects: Pinta includes a wide array of adjustments and effects for tweaking your images.

Pinta is chock-full of goodness in the panels and menus while the layout/menu arrangement is very close to Paint.NET’s setup. So if you are familiar with Paint.NET, then you will feel right at home using the software. This is definitely a software worth taking a few minutes to check out.

Note: Pinta is available for Ubuntu, openSUSE, Windows, Mac OS X, and also comes in zip file, tarball, source code formats.

Is the zip file a portable version, does it need installation?

I love you! I have been trying to find a way to get paint.NET working in ubuntu for literally years. And now I have the next best thing. Thank you very much.

@at0mic – There are none at this time that I can find. But Pinta is still in the early part of the development process, so perhaps there will soon be some. ^__^

@gomez – The zip file is a portable version, but you will need to have Gtk installed on any Windows system you use it on.

@AcidSpoon – You are very welcome! ^__^ Just like you I was SO happy to have this to use in Ubuntu since Paint.NET is one of my absolute favourite must-have photo apps in Windows. ^__^

I installed it on my win7 and the first thing I created with it was an icon for it to replace the generic bs icon windows was showing(maybe it doesn’t have a customized icon..but it was so simple I finished it and installed it on the shortcut properties in less than an hour..I needed that, too! I hate what they did to paint in Win7..what’s with the line tool you have to constantly re-click on before you can use it to create another line? ..or am I missing something? ..whatever..Pinta is my new Windows Paint with many more options! ..thanks, geeks.. YOU ROCK as usual.. :)
Now I’ll install it on my Ubuntu 10.10….
