The Windows Live Essentials 2011 suite is finally out of beta and available for download—it’s a whole set of very capable applications for free, like Windows Live Writer, Messenger, Sync, and Movie Maker.

There’s a lot of updates and changes, and overall the applications are a lot better than they used to be—and they were pretty good before. It’s a great suite of applications that you should really check out if you haven’t—just make sure you know what WLIDSVC is.

Ohh, they’re gonna have to work really, really hard to make people like this, including me. Although it’s just a beta, it currently both looks and works like shit. We’ll see what happens.

Tried one of these beta? at beginning of week. With Win 7 Ultimate x32 and IE9 beta. Initially worked after long install w/o most things checked like Family, Messenger. But after a couple runs I kept getting an Error Code and then couldn’t open Live. Even after a rollback it worked then the Error. Uninstalled. Used prior Live 14, this was 15. Prior launches Live Mail faster.
Do a google to see Error Code posting about this. I’m guessing has to do with IE9 beta tho most other things are fine with it. Only warning is from Flash not to use new version with IE9.

DON”T go near the new Windows Live Photo Gallery! The old version was buggy, slow, and could easily crash Win 7. The new version is much slower, much harder to user, and just plain strange. They added a ribbon interface that LOOKS like those in Office, etc. but doesn’t work the same (doesn’t really work at all). If one is working on photos, and uses an arrow key to pick the next one to work on, WLPG randomly picks the next one for you; no rhyme or reason in its choice. Adjustments that used to be instant now take a while, and saving then loading the next shot takes forever.

    Avoid it like the plague!

    Worst. IM client. Ever.

    Even with M$ standards.

I agree with Ron T, the new version is *horrible*!! Systems freezes for minutes for no apparent reason, slide show had stupid transition effects that can’t be disabled, and other frustrating *features*.

How can I download the previous version?
