The Task Manager is how you can see what's running on a PC, and Microsoft gave it a much-needed overhaul in the recent Windows 11 22H2 update. Now, there are even more improvements on the way.
This year's major Windows 11 update included an all-new Task Manager, with a more modern appearance (matching other Windows 11 applications), an optional dark mode, and an "Efficiency mode" for limiting background processes. Microsoft has rolled out Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 22621.891 and Build 22623.891 to Windows Insider testers on the Beta Channel, and the former update includes more changes to the Task Manager.
First, Microsoft has finally added a search bar to filter processes. The company said in a blog post, "You can filter either using the binary name, PID or publisher name. The filter algorithm matches the context keyword with all possible matches and displays them on the current page." Searching has been a common feature on the equivalents to Task Manager on other platforms (like Activity Monitor on macOS), so it's great to see Windows catch up.
Theme support has also been tweaked, as you can now set the Task Manager to be light or dark, instead of always following the system theme. In-app dialogs, such as the popups that appear when customizing columns, are also properly themed now.
It's not clear yet when these changes will roll out to everyone on Windows 11. The new features are already in the Beta Chanel, so at least, Microsoft has deemed them stable enough to move beyond the bleeding-edge Dev Channel.
