Addams Family Values
The second live-action movie featuring the creepy, kooky, mysterious, and spooky Addams family leans even harder on the dark, twisted humor, to memorable effect. Poor Uncle Fester (Christopher Lloyd) is targeted by a serial killer (Joan Cusack) who seduces lonely rich men and cashes in on their inheritances, while children Wednesday (Christina Ricci) and Pugsley (Jimmy Workman) have to deal with the horrors of summer camp. Raul Julia and Anjelica Huston return as parents Gomez and Morticia, leading their family through various dangers with morbid cheer.

The Devil's Advocate
Al Pacino displays his finest overacting in this satisfyingly ridiculous thriller, which makes the connection between Satan and lawyers literal. Keanu Reeves plays a hotshot young defense lawyer recruited by a high-end New York City law firm run by a slick legal kingpin.
Pacino's John Milton is the actual devil, and his efforts to corrupt Reeves' Kevin Lomax are insidious and a lot of fun to watch. Pacino relishes the role of Lucifer in the flesh, delivering a couple of juicy monologues that would be great for quoting extensively at Halloween parties.

Evil Dead
As far as horror remakes go, Evil Dead is a step up from most calculated cash-ins. It helps that it was produced by original The Evil Dead director Sam Raimi, who helps guide filmmaker Fede Alvarez in his reimagining of the horror classic. Jane Levy stars as a woman staying at an isolated cabin with friends and family while she detoxes from heroin addiction.
She has to battle the undead when one of her friends reads from a cursed book in the cabin's basement. Alvarez retains Raimi's gonzo horror spirit while adding even more blood and gore, and Levy makes for a worthy successor to original star Bruce Campbell.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night
Director Ana Lily Amirpour made a striking debut with this unclassifiable film, a black-and-white curiosity that's part vampire movie, part Western, part social drama. The title character (Sheila Vand) is a mysterious woman living in a fictional Iranian city full of crime and corruption. She's also a vampire, feeding on criminals and forging a connection with a young man struggling to make ends meet. Amirpour creates an eerie, stylish portrait of loneliness, using vampirism as an all-purpose metaphor for a variety of modern ills.

Halloween
What better movie to watch on Halloween than a horror classic named after the holiday? John Carpenter's Halloween kicked off a labyrinthine franchise, but the original is still the best. It's a simple, extraordinarily effective story about implacable masked killer Michael Myers stalking suburban babysitters on Halloween. Jamie Lee Curtis plays resourceful teenager Laurie Strode, with Donald Pleasence as the psychiatrist tracking Michael following his escape from a mental institution.

The House of the Devil
Ti West's 1980s-set horror movie lovingly recreates the low-budget horror of the time period, while adding a modern indie twist. Jocelin Donahue plays a babysitter who discovers that her latest job involves keeping watch over an invalid old woman in a large creepy house. West ratchets up the dread with slow, ominous scenes of the main character exploring the house, always on the edge of terror. When the danger finally arrives, it's a glorious retro freakout courtesy of imposing actor Tom Noonan.

The Mask
Halloween masks don't actually offer the kind of transformation that Stanley Ipkiss (Jim Carrey) experiences in The Mask, but they do often give people the chance to cut loose. Stanley does more than cut loose when he discovers a mystical mask that changes him into a rubbery, green-faced dynamo.
That transformation allows Carrey to unleash his full powers of physical comedy, spouting various catchphrases that became embedded in pop culture. The delightfully madcap movie also features the striking screen debut of Cameron Diaz, as a lounge singer who is drawn to Stanley and gets caught up in his battle with gangsters.

Stephen King's It
Pennywise the clown has joined the ranks of iconic horror characters as a perennial Halloween costume, and that started with this movie based on Stephen King's epic novel It. Originally produced as a two-part miniseries for ABC, this version stars Tim Curry as the killer clown who torments the small town of Derry, Maine.
Pennywise is just one form of the monster that must be defeated by a group of friends, first when they are kids in the 1960s, and later when they reunite as adults. Although the subsequent theatrical films made a bigger splash, this version of It is surprisingly intense for network TV, and Curry makes for an unsettling villain.

10 Cloverfield Lane
Opening your door to strangers can be dangerous, whether it's on Halloween or on the verge of the apocalypse, as in 10 Cloverfield Lane. This installment in the loosely connected alien-based Cloverfield franchise stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead as a woman who wakes up after a car crash to find herself in an underground bunker after a widespread attack.
At least that's what her captor/rescuer, played by John Goodman, tells her. The movie plays with expectations for post-apocalypse narratives, shifting the audience's sympathies as the characters navigate the tense, possibly world-ending situation.

Trick 'r Treat
Denied a planned theatrical release and eventually dropped onto home video two years later, Michael Dougherty's anthology-style movie set on Halloween has nevertheless amassed a substantial cult following. It's strongly evocative of the season, with an autumnal color palette and stories that are scary but not too intense.
Plus, it introduces a cute new horror icon in burlap-outfitted Sam, the embodiment of a young trick-or-treater who enforces the rules of the holiday. Sam roams a town that is extensively decorated for Halloween, where a series of gruesome yet whimsical tales play out.
