The use of an arrow, like , to indicate direction on signage did not appear in use until the 18th century (with the arrow’s fletching being removed during the mid-to-late 19th century). The symbol appeared as an abstract evolution of the previous symbol, in use since the medieval era, of a painted hand pointing a finger (a manicule).
