As is usually the case, Apple capped off its massive event with the Pro versions of its upcoming phones. In this case, the company revealed the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. These are clearly the company's most advanced iPhones, featuring some awe-inspiring display and camera technology.

What Makes These iPhone 13 Pro Models Pro?

The most exciting aspect of the new iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max is the screen. These phones feature Apple's new Super Retina XDR display with ProMotion. That means that the screen will actually adjust from 10Hz to as fast as 120Hz, depending on how you're using it. If you're doing something that requires ultra-smooth motion, the screen will jump to a higher refresh rate. If you don't, it'll go lower to preserve power.

The screen also features 1000 nits max outdoor brightness, a 25% bump over previous generations. If you've ever tried to use your phone while under the bright sun, you know how big of a deal this improvement is.

In terms of size, the iPhone 13 Pro is 6.1" while the iPhone 13 Pro Max is 6.7". This is the same size offered on last year's iPhone Pro models. Both iPhone 13 Pro devices feature OLED technology.

Outside of the screen, it's the camera that puts the Pro versions of the iPhone 13 over the edge. The Pro and Pro Max feature three rear sensors. There's a Wide lens with a ƒ/1.5 aperture, an Ultra-Wide with a ƒ/1.8 aperture, and a Telephoto lens with a 3X optical zoom. All of the lenses feature Night Mode, which is designed for capturing photos in low-light situations.

The phone will actually do macro photography, which has never really been possible with an iPhone before. The macro capabilities feature a minimum focus distance of 2 centimeters, which means you can get right up next to your subject.

Like the regular iPhone 13, the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max support Apple's new Cinematic Mode. It also adds ProRes, which Apple describes as "an advanced video codec used widely as the final delivery format for commercials, feature films, and broadcasts, to offer higher color fidelity and less compression." It makes the iPhone more viable as a professional video camera.

Of course, it comes with the A15 Bionic chip, support for 5G, and every other feature you'll find on the iPhone 13.

iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max Price and Availability

Apple announced that the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max would be available for preorder starting September 17, 2021. The phone will then release on September 24.

The iPhone 13 Pro will start at $999 for the 128GB version, the same price as last year's model. The Pro Max will retail for $1,099 for 128GB, which is also last year's price.
