Google Extends Free Gmail-based Phonecalls Through 2013

Whether you were enjoying free domestic calls via Gmail’s built-in phone function throughout 2012 or this is the first you’ve heard of the feature, you can take advantage of free calls throughout 2013.

From the official Gmail blog:

Many of you call phones from Gmail to easily connect with friends and family. If you’re in the US and Canada, you’ll continue to be able to make free domestic calls through 2013. Plus, in most countries, you can still call the rest of the world from Gmail at insanely low rates.

It would be nice if I can make these calls using android phone in Canada.

@Kiran Look at the app Talkatone. You may have to setup a US based number, not sure.

I’m not sure if I want to use any of Google’s products. Indefinitely keeping search info on everyone who has ever used it is troubling enough. But to then change policies?!

I also don’t know what Google does about call logs when it comes to GMail VoIP-like services either. But if past behavior & policy reversals is any indication then I’m not touching it with a 10-foot Ethernet cord. Thanks but no thanks.

…meanwhile, Skype continues to remove features and charge more for a service that they once offered for free. (Could it have something to do with Microsoft’s new ownership?)

    So, is there anyone else?

    Dell Voice:

I don’t know if it works in the US, but if you’re Canadian, there are apps for Andriod, iPhone, Blackberry and your pc.

To me, “… Extends Free Gmail-based Phonecalls…” means covering more areas or operate in more places for free. These ‘free’ phone calls can only be made in Canada and the U.S.A. What about other countries?

When I first started using google voice, there was an entry to click on in the gmail page for the google voice;about a year ago it disappeared though I could bring it up by calling the number from a phone.
The strangest thing is other google voice accounts I have seen still have the entry on the gmail page.
Anybody know how to put this back?,since it does not appear on any google docs I can find.
