Login to Windows 8 Desktop Mode Automatically with ClassicStarter [Downloads]

The other day we shared a quick keyboard tip for going straight to Desktop Mode in Windows 8 when you logged in. Today we are back with a small app that gets you straight to Desktop Mode with ‘set it and forget it’ ease.

You will need to install ClassicStarter after you have extracted the contents of the zip file. Once that is done simply start the app up and this is what you will see… The only thing you will need to do is click on the Classic Desktop Button.

Once you have clicked on the Classic Desktop Button it will ‘grey out’. Simply exit the app, log out, and then log back into your system. The Start Screen will display for a moment or two, but everything will shift over to Desktop Mode automatically without any additional actions required on your part.

To reverse the process and set the Start Screen as the default just start the app up again and click on the Metro Desktop Button, exit the app, and then log out/log back in.

I wish these articles had a +1 button. I don’t really have anything to say other than I want to +1 it.

  2. Fantasm

Strange how almost every article about windows 8, is about turning off the so called “features” and making it like windows 7

Thanks so much for sharing this. Might go give Windows 8 another try now that there is a way around the one thing I hate the most of Windows 8.

@Paul – You are most welcome. ^_^ I remembered your comment from earlier in the week on the other Windows 8 post and thought you might like this when I wrote it up. ^_^

Hey Microsoft, you ever wondered why people are so desperate to disable metro?

It’s so frustrating, we shouldn’t have to use 3rd party apps and hacks to get Win 8 behaving like a normal PC.

    Great article.

I hate the new Metro interface and I can’t understand how coud it be used in offices: my colleagues say the won’t ever use W8… it definitely seems a videogame, not a “serious” OS like W7…

    dear Microsoft:
In our offices we don’t have touch screens, we only need the new interface (that is better than W7), but WITH transparency and the orb.
We don’t bother with useless big colored buttons…
we have no time to PLAY with these buttons…
we must WORK, as we currently do with W7 !
don’t you listen to us? you won’t get any $ from us…
we’ll wait for W9 and we hope it’ll have only the “old” interface, after the sure flop of W8 Metro UI…

BTW: ClassicStarter does not work in my VM … when I restart W8, everything works as usual, with the ugly interface… :-(

    Windows eight causes Windows hate

Windows 8 will get used by people that don’t care about the interface, these will be the people that let microsoft collect data about how they use their computers, they will base results off of that. Just like the results that told them the start button didn’t matter anymore.
