I suggest You should stop writing about Windows 8. It is horrible, it is a giant mistake.

These icons also horrible, a five year old kid could draw many-many times better icons that these.

Why should I use pictograms from a railway station on my desktop?

This Microsoft style could have been great on a 4.77 MHz XT with 640k RAM. This primitive style would have been perfect for that hardware. But on today’s 4-6 core processors what should I do with this nonsense. Just see how Linux Compiz looks with its huge effects! That is what fits today’s computers and not that primitive rectangular world from the past. Shame on You Microsoft!

Wait what? You like the cheesy Linux Compiz effects?
Disagree. I love the metro look. And good luck getting a child to draw minimalistic icons that look good.

I dont want big effects that look cheesy and are just to show off, I want my computer to work, and work fast. I want it to be elegant.

    Go Microsoft!

Simple icon uses less memory and quicker to re-draw than complex icon. The boxes work for me. Keep the desktop simple with no million color photo.

    KISS: keep it simple silly

Typically, the definition of business is to grab a mediocre idea. Market it, and use the money to suffocate natural improvements & innovation and bleed people with the joys of riding the horse and buggy. Eventually the core group dies off and tremendous leaps in technology are recorded while the Science Fiction writers say, “what took you so long?” We need to set the quality-of-life and the genetic profile above the power of the profit margin.

@Little John: Give me a break. Today’s PHONES have about a hundred times the computing power of the computers that flew ALL of the Apollo modules to the Moon and back – combined. I’m hardly going to adopt a bunch of goofy-looking, art-free, butt-ugly icons because they’ll supposedly make my computer run a zilla-second faster than it currently does.

wow, …those are a real sad set of icons. I’m all for minimalism & stuff, but these just suck from a bad case of boredom.
The systems that I generally get & maintain for clients today start with 8 to16 gigs of ram, 300gb Solid State HD, Intel® Core™ i7 Quad-Core Processor & Quadro FX 1800M Graphics (1GBmem). I don’t think that memory for icons should be an issue.

  9. Szűcs János

Well, if memory and power is an issue, then why not throw away multitasking, why not throw away graphical screens? Bring back good old MS-DOS 6.22 with Volkov commander and character mode web browsers! It will boot in a second, it will be lightning fast! The future is the past! Is that what Microsoft really thinks?

What a sad effort – minimalist? Is this the future of graphic design — dull, boring, uninspiring and talentless

I have 8 gigs of Ram, and 2 video cards, with a Gig each….
I am not going to worry about saving memory…
I want my computer to display millions of colours… That’s why I don’t have a CGA video card…(
We outgrew that stuff decades ago…
I do not want icons on my computer that look like they were drawn by toddlers for the illiterate…
On my 40″ screen those stupid rectangles and squares are the size of postcards…Looks like crap….
On looks alone I will not install Windows 8. That’s aside from the lack of a start menu etc…
Ever tried to drag a mouse 20 odd inches down a monitor just to close a stupid App that you clicked on by accident…? Likewise sideways scrolling 3 feet at a time….
Metro UI is already being heralded as an Epic Fail…. I’m echoing that sentiment too…
    Let Windows 8 die…. It’s already a zombie version of Windows….
