NASA Releases First Video Footage of the Dark Side of the Moon [Video]

Courtesy of NASA’s GRAIL moon exploration spacecraft, we can see the first video footage of the dark side of the Moon.

From the press release:

A camera aboard one of NASA’s twin Gravity Recovery And Interior Laboratory (GRAIL) lunar spacecraft has returned its first unique view of the far side of the moon. MoonKAM, or Moon Knowledge Acquired by Middle school students, will be used by students nationwide to select lunar images for study.

GRAIL consists of two identical spacecraft, recently named Ebb and Flow, each of which is equipped with a MoonKAM. The images were taken as part of a test of Ebb’s MoonKAM on Jan. 19. The GRAIL project plans to test the MoonKAM aboard Flow at a later date.

The video uses the correct reference to the “far side” of the moon — i.e. the side we cannot see from Earth. That side can be dark (when we see a full moon from Earth) or it can be bathed in sunlight (when we see a new moon from Earth).

There is no more a dark side of the moon than there is a dark side of the Earth.

Fer cryin’ out loud! The “dark side” is a freaking metaphor! When will you trolls get it? You can’t bring yourselves to say anything nice about anything. You post the most ridiculous, redundant, refurbished cheap shots you can contrive just to post something.
Have YOU ever personally seen the other side of the moon? Has light from the sun reflected off of it and then immediately impinged it’s glory onto your waiting retinas without third party assistance? No! The only one’s who’ve had that experience are the astronauts who’ve gone to the MOON!!!
SO! Since you’ve NEVER seen that view unaided, like the vast, vast, vast majority of the HUMAN RACE, You really really should just quit talking on ANY post where your ignorance is so palpably obvious. It like being proud of dripping syphilis cankers on your face.

Gettem’ J.A.! I think what they are trying to say is that grammatically, there should be quotes around the words dark side. Since it is a metaphor for the side we can’t see… :-P

Like Pink Floyd said “There’s no dark side of the moon, a matter a fact it’s all dark”

    Don’t feed the trolls.

  8. Kevalin

I was just thinking that if you’ve ever driven through Eastern Colorado in Summer or Fall, you HAVE seen the dark side of the moon. :-D

Wtf??? Can’t I just enjoy these articles/videos. I scroll down to the comments thinking I’m going to learn more and all I see is ‘quien es mas macho’ crap!!!

…you can enjoy the articles/videos you turd. Just don’t read all the comments & complain about it.
If you want an education, then take some classes. Your comment is just as annoying.

From an educator’s point of view it is legitimate to criticize comments about “the dark side of the moon” because it is a persistent misconception. In the old Disneyland trip to the moon ride they dropped flares to see the surface on the other side. That is a misconception, not a metaphor.

The one question which can conclusively prove there is no actual “dark side” to the moon.
That is, what happens to the “dark side” of the moon during our solar eclipse…?
It certainly doesn’t hide… or fold out to reveal it’s centre thus avoiding the spotlight of the sun… maybe it lights up… or maybe i’m wrong. We may never know… :p

  13. Ushindi

I always thought that side was where the aliens built their moon base so we couldn’t see it from earth? I didn’t notice any alien base in the video, though – reality rears its ugly head once again and destroys childhood beliefs…lol

Some say the moon is hollow, or that it is made of cheese… perfectly good reasons to be dubious of perfectly logical science… :)

  15. David

dark.. as in Dark Ages maybe? Presumably not as in dark chocolate. And there’s no such thing as dark cheese.. is there?

The Dark Ages of Britain are only dark inasmuch as they are comparatively unknown. But like the moon, current exploration is shedding new light on them. (ok, u can groan now).

If the video actually shows the “dark” side of the moon – then the spacecraft must have one heck of a flash bulb!

My old physics-astronomy professor had a theory that once the first spacecraft traveled around the moon it would be proven that the far side was actually just scaffolding, like a Hollywood set. He was kind of a kook so I’m not sure whether or not he was joking.

It’s quite interesting and pl try to share more videos like this.
