Mitsubishi Demos Near-Future Car Instrument Interface Technology [Video]

Mitsubishi recently demoed a car instrument interface concept (EMIRAI) at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show that feels a bit like something out of a sci-fi movie. With a curved digital display surface, touch screen operation, shape changing buttons on the steering wheel, and more this would make for a whole new driving experience.

    Nice and beautiful.
But I thought driving was mainly done by keeping your eyes on the road.
I’m afraid this interfacing is very distracting. Especially the writing display. Watch the road… Road? What road? Bang! Oops…
For passengers it is fine, but not for the driver.
Unless the car will be driving itself. Which might very well be possible by then.

I especially like the “simulate a noise to let other drivers know you’re nearby” feature. And one of the options is Jet Engine???

For the curious, the word (or name as its used here) “mirai” means “future” in Japanese. Fitting name for such a development I’d say.

Presumably uses a HUD? That would fix the distracting nature of the instrument panel.
