GEEK TRIVIA

Which Operating System Bestows Animal Code Names On All Releases?
Windows
Mac OS
Unix
Ubuntu

Answer: Ubuntu

Ubuntu, one of the more popular distributions of Linux, was first released to the public in October of 2004. The first public version was 4.10 and bore the codename Warty Warthog. The second and third releases bore the names Hoary Hedgehog and Breezy Badger.

Then, with the release of version 6.06 Dapper Drake, they decided to begin alphabetizing the codenames so users could easily detect the version based on the nickname assigned to the release.

From Dapper Drake onward Ubuntu Linux release codenames have been alphabetical. To date the operating system has sported the following release names:

  • 4.10 Warty Warthog
  • 5.04 Hoary Hedgehog
  • 5.10 Breezy Badger
  • 6.06 Dapper Drake
  • 6.10 Edgy Eft
  • 7.04 Feisty Fawn
  • 7.10 Gutsy Gibbon
  • 8.04 Hardy Heron
  • 8.10 Intrepid Ibex
  • 9.04 Jaunty Jackalope
  • 9.10 Karmic Koala
  • 10.04 Lucid Lynx
  • 10.10 Maverick Meerkat
