There are more features than just scanning the registry.  From the main menu access different features including Improving OS performance and stability, Scanning for invalid short cuts, Automatic registry backups, Real-time registry monitoring, Tune-up of services, scheduled scans, and more.

Compact Your Registry allows optimization by analyzing, rebuilding, and compacting the registry.  It removes registry gaps, corrupt keys, and optimizes free space.

using the compacting feature does require a system restart.

Registry Monitor runs quietly in the background and there will be a taskbar icon you can right click to view its progress.

With one click…Optimize Your System applies a set of tweaks and patches directly to the Windows Registry that are designed to improve system performance.  It also includes defragmentation  and rebuilding, and sorts and refreshes the Windows Start Menu items to improve the efficiency and speed for startup.

Tune-up Your Services feature has the ability to improve the performance of your computer and provide better start-up times. This feature changes the preference of non-essential Windows services which can result in fewer system resources being consumed to help your software run more efficiently.

By going into General Settings you can view detailed log reports on the features you have run.

All of the log reports are saved as a text file, these come in handy when troubleshooting your computer.

Scans of the registry and other fixes are incredibly fast and do not bog down system resources.

They make it easier to access different areas of the Windows system like the Control Panel and Windows Update rather than having to dig through multiple directories.

Conclusion

Registry Mechanic 8 is not only great tool for fixing errors in the registry but also includes some great utilities for other aspect so system performance.  You always want to be very careful when making any changes in the registry and this creates a backup of the current settings every time.  If the system seems unstable after a session you can easily go back and restore it.  PC Tools offer a fairly liberal license policy in allowing you to install it on three different computers for $29.95.  Registry mechanic 8 supports Windows 2000, XP and Vista both 32 and 64bit versions.  If you are still running legacy Windows ME or 98 you will need to download version 7.
