Winamp’s ability to easily dock on the top of the screen, and a rich set of hotkeys, makes it a great audio player still.

  2. I formatted my drive with all my music, I never thought there was a program that could recover it all. I installed this, and it even got back things from a previous format. I highly recommend this software.

  3. JHubbard92

I think it is a very good piece of software. Until you have finished all your first time backups it can be a pain in the bum, as it is quite slow and sluggish, my first time PC backup took about 5 hours, so make sure you have quite a bit of time on your hands. I at first had problems backing up to a network drive, kept giving me messages such as “backup destination not available” etc. It might take a while to get to like and get used to Norton Ghost.

Main downside: The amount of error popups and interuptions..

Main upside: It gives you a good variety of backup options such as AES encryption and incremential backup points.

    Overall 4/5

  4. You can purchase this version for $19 for 3 PC licenses with an 18 month subscription included (?).

    Thanks for the excellent review.

Additional thought: I had to disable the newly released “Microsoft Security Essentials” since it was hogging the CPU while SM9 was working. Most probably due to the disk and file activities that SM9 was performing.

  5. You have omitted to say how much improvement there was (or not), in the areas the program worked on. Your ‘review’ just covers how to install & run it. Would you care to elaborate?

  6. whs

That sounds very expensive. I think I stick to my WMCapture which was $40 for life and produces superb results.

  7. You may try Nemo PDF To Word to test whether it helps or not. Any way I’m using it. The characters in the PDF are likely Unicode characters given particular places on the page. Since you want to copy the PDF content to Word, I think this Nemo converter may help, as it retains all the features of the original file, including mathematical symbols. Try to see is it true or not.

I have been using Second copy for more years that I can remember.
I actually feel that the “negative – Need to create multiple profiles to backup same files to multiple locations ” is actually a strong positive.
I Use, clone, and synchronize, Manual and automatic capabilities.
I have NEVER found a better product – and believe me _ try and buy them all (at least once).
I am NOT employed by any of them.
My opinions are based on decades of experience in data storage management.
My only “continuing” request to the vendors is their logging.
I wish they would create TWO logs instead of providing a summary or detail.
I used to create the detail but have now switched to summary.
99% of the time the summary is fine but on occassion the summary says 10 files were copied and I had expected -0- so I do not know which files were copied (or deleted) on a clone

I use the “auto” backup for my email system (eudora) every hour.
I use Manual for on demand “backup”. Usually the last thing I do at end of day.
I have a couple of folders that I sync manually when I have made changes I want reflected on my Laptop.
My configuration consists of XP-Laptop, Vista Desktop(Main) and XP-desktop(older backup)
I also use the free MOZY backup for my “really” critical folders.

There have been many occasions when Second copy has “saved my life”
I also use the clone function after I have run Spaceman to remove dups. The size of dups is amazing, sometimes in the GB range, A simple clone operation reduces the storage on the other two machines.

I rarely post reviews of products, but this (and spaceman) are two that I really feel strong and positive about.

  9. pebe

rebit will NOT work in 64bit format!

  10. I work in a big-box office supply store, so I usually try all the software I can. I pay particular attention to antivirus/antispyware because it’s so popular. I tried NAV2010 and am greatly disappointed. After install and restart, I opened a largish PDF file (~3mb). It took 12 seconds to open. I uninstalled NAV; it took three seconds to open after restart. Just for kicks I installed Microsoft’s new Security Essentials. Again, after restarting, my PDF file opened in about three seconds. Windows 7 64-bit, 8 gb RAM.

i tried the 90 day tried a few years ago. after the first week i purchased this. i even had 6 months left on kaspersky internet security. eset is how a security suite should run. the only time i even know its running is the brief notification. eset is highly customizable, more so than others. the firewall set at interactive filtering actually remembers settings and non intrusive after the initial set up. also included are system inspector ans system rescue. i recommend eset to everyone, once you’ve tried it you’ll never use anything else.

  12. 0zSpitt

garbage highly intrusive, updates failed continuously leaving a huge red X in the taskbar. now way to stop the system from running. it only supported internet explorer. took forever to install, scan, run its so-called maintenance, etc. extremely over priced

  13. 0zSpitt

one of the best scanners. works in safe mode, updates and run smooth and with little resource usage. recommended for every computer

  14. 0zSpitt

excellent, i watch what i select on install to keep it as unobtrusive as possible. i like to put things whee i want them in my system. excellent playback and radio selection. i agree with thegeek about the docking. i’ve put it in my start menu, look great on the desktop as well as having an actual function

  15. Have been using BD forever, before it was “discovered” here in the US. It has stopped every infection. Never had a problem with any of my pcs over all these years. Have installed it on hundreds of pcs and notebooks and none of those folks have had problems. My father had N installed on his pc. Constant problems all the time and he was unhappy with his pc. Removed N, installed BD. End of problems. Even he is recommending it.
Have I had “problems”? Yes, but BD solved them. I know there are some free apps out there and 2-3 good ones. I am a big fan of BD and wouldn’t change unless there was a compelling reason. Haven’t seen one.

  16. I’ve been using BitDefender 2010 since it appeared in august and it was indeed a very pleasant surprise!! It’s easy to use, very effective and stable on a w 7 computer. I like the game mode setting that I use very much and the home network! I definitely recommend it.

  17. I make regular use of portable apps. It’ a great tool to make available every software you use
    anywhere.

Continued never ending viruses and trojans are in the best interest of these 3rd party virus “protection” FOR MONEY software developers… can you connect the dots?

I’ve used the FREE version of AVG for over 10 years and never had a viral or trojan problem. Now and it’s about time MicroSuck has introduced their free version Microsoft Security Essentials which has done the job… so far.

There is absolutely no reason why MS has not protected THEIR OWN product from the get go… other than making money which they have done in the past. If it where not for Mac beating MS of the head with the TV adds, MS would still be selling their own protection software… thanks Apple!

The bottom line if people can make money on “virus protection” software… THERE WILL ALWAYS BE VIRUSES! So go pay Norton and help support the money train.

  19. Norton is terrible for the blind. The program is written in such a way the standard screen readers cannot read the links, text or buttons. Avoid if you are blind.

  20. I used totalsecurity 2009 last year with my Windows XPand was impressed out of my socks. Easy to use, blocked viruses from the naughty sites, didn’t slow down PC performance at all. The TotalSecurity 2010 is still good as far as detecting and cleaning viruses and the other utilities are great as well. But, my PC has slowed down almost to a crawl, it literally takes an whole hour to do a deep system scan. Some web pages take forever to open and some email messages don’t open at all. When I uninstall TotalSecurity, PC performance gets back to normal. And, don’t try to get tech. support…you can forget that.

  21. i reallllyyy needed this THANKS!!

  22. whiplash55

Great review I thought of using it but ended up doing a inplace upgrade which worked fine.

  23. Srini1969

Looks interesting. I want to move my MS office from my C drive to D drive. Will this software do it?

  24. Hatryst

If you’re planning to wipe off and reinstall your windows just because its screwed up by viruses, WAIT… Use Malwarebytes, and see the difference !

  25. After reading many online reviews I decided to buy the software. The installation took forever and deleted email folders without letting me choose to do so.
Then the real problems began! Slow computer. CPU always at 40% or more, from BD using it. Internet goes blank. Software crashes and asks to reboot the computer. The problems just went on and on. Service from BD was horrible! 30 days and no fix to the solution. Their solution – disable most of the components! You are left with a shell of a software that is barely usable.
Stay very far away from this one. Try ESET NOD32!

  27. I’ve tried this twice, once on an XP and once on a Win7 machine. On the XP machine it reported my ‘saved games’ files as Trojans or whatever and some system files as backdoors. On the 7 machine it reported windows system files as backdoors. That’s progress?
No, that’s too many false positives for me. No thank you.

  28. RTShaw

Whew thank u, was going 2 give it a try but no need 2 waste my time now.I’ll stick with Genie Bkup

  29. Very poorly writen program slow you pc down

  30. I tried the “use once” PC Mover version (it was $9 on Amazon) and didn’t get to a successful conclusion so I ended up doing it manually.

My PC would not boot (it blue screened) after I used PC Mover. I restored my PC (did an image backup before doing the move) and planned to try it again, this time not moving as much.

Of course my “use once” was used up. Laplink was kind enough, after a few days discussion on what happened, to refresh my license. This was too long and I had done the move manually by the time they gave me a license extension. Also, if it was again only good for “one try” then already having had a problem, I suspect it would have taken me multiple tries to get it working. So the “one try” license approach didn’t work for me (the above review was for the pro version – which does not have this problem, I hope).

I did however put my “old” XP system into a virtual machine using VMWare and running on my upgraded Windows 7 PC. This way I could still use my old applications until I got the time to move them out of the virtual PC and install them natively on my PC. This is a nice, but Geeky, way to do the upgrade, and be able to keep my old system running until I get my Windows 7 updated with everything.

  31. Once I got it on my computer and working correctly, I like the ease of use; I don’t have to do squat! File recovery is simple. I created a few dummy files and, once backed up, deleted them and emptied the trash can, then tried to recover the back ups. File recovery was easy and fairly fast.

Carbonite is intended for data back up. It can be told to back up program folders but not all program files can be backed up. Even if all files were backed up, they wouldn’t be able to be used for reinstalling programs but can be used to restore program settings, data, etc.

As mentioned already, it takes forever to do the initial back up, something I don’t think is a big deal since it’s a one time thing. Unfortunately, recovery for anything more than a few small files will also take forever. For this reason, I wouldn’t depend on Carbonite for your only back up unless you have a tiny system; external hard drives or optical disks are better for the primary back up. However, Carbonite is excellent for a secondary, off site back up in case you lose both your machine and your primary back up, such as if your house burns down or both your main machine and the external drive(s) are stolen.

I haven’t noticed any computer slowing due to Carbonite. Unless you go in and tell it to back up a file as soon as possible, it waits until there is no activity on the computer to upload files to be backed up. Although one can specify when back ups are to occur, I don’t really see a need for this since the program won’t interfere with anything else going on. I keep it set to Automatic and Low Priority (the default settings) and can’t tell it’s there doing its thing unless I go in and look.

The main complaint I have with Carbonite is their tech help is apparently based in India. I’ve never had happy experiences with tech help, call centers, etc. based in India(I also have heartburn with American companies taking jobs away from Americans by farming them out to foreign companies). I had an access problem (one most people will not encounter) I managed to solve on my own yet the morons kept resetting my password after I told them the problem was taken care of.

Carbonite feels if you are going to have any problems with the service, it will happen during the trial period so they feel justified telling you they will deny any request for refunds should you be unhappy with them once you have forked over the loot. It kind of galls me but it is true the free trial should be long enough to tell if it works for you.

A very minor complaint is the use of yellow or green dots to indicate the state of the back up. Color coding is a pet peeve of mine since I’m color blind (as is roughly 10% of the population to some degree or another) and I can’t tell the @#$%^! dots apart! However, one can always go into the right click menu of the file or folder to find out the status. Fortunately, once the initial back ups have been done, there is little need to check.

Overall, I’m happy with Carbonite as an offsite secondary back up. It is easy to use. It may be slow (it’s really only a problem at first) but unlimited storage for only $55 a year is a steal and at that price, I can be patient. The company has been around for a while and survived the recent economic crisis so will probably be around for awhile longer (although, being the coward I am, I plan on setting up another online back up service soon so I’ll have one still in place should the other one go belly up). Btw, Carbonite can only be used with a broadband internet connection.

  32. I’ve just installed Rebit on my Windows 7 64 bit machine and it works fine. I don’t know if it’s a newer version but I”m having no problem. I’d recommend it.

  33. Hello,
I’m very happy with PC Tools products, this one is very easy to use, I haven’t had any problems until recently, when this software couldn’t cope with 2 nasty Trojans, I had to uninstall and get something else. Overall: very good.

  34. KBPrez

I’ve been using the free version of Revo Uninstaller for quite awhile and LOVE it. I’m not sure I’m willing to pay for the extras in the PRO version, but I’ll give it a try.

  35. lilsting10

Looking at the screenshots and reading the article, it doesn’t seem to have much over the free version other than the faster scan times. And it looks like some things have been removed to fit the new user interface, such as the explanation about what each scan type is/does.

Is there a compelling reason why one should make the jump to Pro?

  36. The review was NOT very helpful since many of the screen shots are missing in the review. I cannot really evaluate this review with so many screen shots missing!

  37. Advanced PDF To Word 5.0 is a pretty useful tool to convert PDF files to Word Documents,Converted quality is fairly good: with text content, page layouts, images, and text hyperlinks preserved.what’s more,it only costs you $19.95,so why not have a try.http://www.advancedpdfconverter.com/products/pdftoword.html

  38. From an initial trial, it just can’t be any easier.

    Storageman,

How does Second Copy compare to programs such as PC Backup, or Genie Backup Manager? I’m not an “IT” guy as such but i do manage the IT side of things for the small business i work for.

When i google reviews on backup programs, Second Copy doesn’t show up but the two i mentioned above are at top of the list. What are your thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.
    Minh.
