I had Attachments, NonEnum, Ratings, and System, but no Explorer. So close, but yet still a grayed out Volume icon in my Notification area. What should I do now? With most Explorer/task bar related problems rather than logging-off & on again, you can always restart Explorer instead; This means you don't need to close any apps or anything... Just run TaskMgr, then find explorer.exe on the Processes tab and choose 'End Process'. Then choose File, New Task, and enter Explorer, and Explorer will restart. For me, this was enough to get my volume icon back!. I had this problem, but I didn’t have anything in the registry settings.

With most Explorer/task bar related problems rather than logging-off & on again, you can always restart Explorer instead; This means you don’t need to close any apps or anything… Just run TaskMgr, then find explorer.exe on the Processes tab and choose ‘End Process’.
