Well, as I see this two values all here:

a) for Win Vista:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Hide DesktopIcons\NewStartPanel

b) for Win XP SP2 & SP3 (as here the IE real Icon is not present any more by default on a Desktop):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel

On Win Vista we have “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” and on Win XP we have “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE”, this might lead my still not tested conclusion that on Win Vista it is only valid for the Current User only, and on Win XP for all the Users on that Computer…

Well, maybe that note herein of mine, will be useful to someone to really check it out if needed…

Thanks for this info! Worked like a charm.

I have clients that have multiple users on one PC, and having things uniform makes life a lot easier for me.

For anyone interested in setting the IE7 icon on the Public (that is the same as All Users in WinXP) desktop, follow the same instructions The Geek gave above with these slight changes:

1. Open regedt32.exe using the Start menu search or run box, and then navigate down to the following key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\HideDesktopIcons\NewStartPanel

2. Change the Value of Reg Key {871C5380-42A0-1069-A2EA-08002B30309D} to 0
