The upgrade problem appears only on gnome desktop. KDE does not pose any such problem and the upgrade was effortless. Time to switch.

I am not the cool programmer or anything like that. I just so many times heard about this - and i decided to install it. Usually I run XP.
So -now I have livecd of 6.10 and soon (but don't know when) - get the 7.04 one. My questo is - what is better - to install 6.10 (of course - as one of two systems) and the somehow upgrade it with livecd of 7.04? Or better just to wait and install 7.04 when i get it?

Thanks for the Great instructions, they worked perfectly for me. Have you written more docs with tips? Loved the Alt + F2 combo. Total noobie here.

Unfortunately,
update-manager -c
crashed halfway through for me - and it had managed to update
update-manager
, which was now asking for
PyGTK
which I didn't have installed...

...You can continue the installation manually by doing
sudo dpkg --configure -a
to carry on from the console. I'm not sure if this will do the 'cleanup' step, as it's doing it on my Edgy box atm.

-- "Does upgrading from Dapper through Feisty wipe personal files..Should I backup before or will everything be fine???"

Upgrading will not wipe any of your personal files.

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade directly from the CD/DVD.

What you'll need to do is make sure the cdrom is selected as the primary source in the sources file (should be able to do it via the GUI, I'd imagine)

Then you'd need to update the sources ( apt-get update ), and then try and launch the upgrade process.

Note that I've not tested this out yet... I'll try and do so in the next day or so.
