The Official How-To Geek CrossLoop Client
It’s no secret that we are big fans of CrossLoop because of the easy to use interface designed with end-users in mind. We’ve even taken it a step further and explained how geeks like you can make money using the CrossLoop marketplace… and now we’ve stamped our logo on it.
Of course, what we’ve actually done is partner with CrossLoop to create a version of the client with the How-To Geek logo on it, as the first step towards even better things in the future.
Note: In case you are wondering, it works exactly the same as the regular client… it’s just more geeky. And it’s still completely free.
The Client
This version of the client has our logo in the lower right-hand side…
You’ll notice that the screenshot is from our very own Mysticgeek, who has a fulltime PC repair business and is available for help via CrossLoop.
Installing the Client
The installation process is very simple, just click Next a couple of times:
If you already have the regular CrossLoop client installed, this one will install right over top of it.
Do I Really Need This Instead of the Regular Version?
Nope. The entire purpose of creating this version is to put our stamp of approval on this completely free product. If you aren’t already using CrossLoop, you should strongly consider trying it out, though.
What’s Next?
We’re working with CrossLoop to help geeks like you reach end-users in need of help. At some point in the future, we’ll start promoting some How-To Geek regulars that also use CrossLoop to provide help. Stay tuned.
How Do I Get It?
You can download it directly from our servers right here.

I’m thinking this could be a real win-win: geeks like us flexing our nerd-muscles and feeling good about ourselves, while also helping those in need. Great!
My only concern is marketing, though. Plenty of the readers for this site (and others like it) may have heard of CrossLoop, and indeed have already installed it; however, I’m afraid those users who may most readily benefit from the help we geeks have to offer are in fact the very same people who do NOT have CrossLoop installed, or never ever heard of it.
…oh, and just a heads up – the screenshot says version 2.21, while the button for the download says version 2.20.
Good point on the button… I need to update it =)
You are right about helping people, which is what I’m trying to solve. Lots more collaboration coming in the future.
Got my HowToGeek branded version……..woohoo.
sweet, the HTG site is expanding and becoming more user friendly.
Your article didn’t really say what exactly CrossLoop is, and the website for it didn’t help me either (although it is pretty early in the morning so maybe I just missed it) Is it just some sort of instant messenger for tech support? I didn’t want to install it to find out it might be something I’m just not interested in.
@zigloo: It’s a program to let you remotely control someone else’s computer to help fix it. See http://www.howtogeek.com/howto.....-easy-way/
Very kewl article, and I downloaded the “htg” copy of cross loop… thanks…. I have been using CL for a while and agree with you about how great a product it is, now with your stamp of approval… a little bit better!
I absolutely love Crossloop! From finally being able to help my mother fix her pc from across the big pond, to helping a mate of my boss set up an outlook express (not a word! ;-P ) signature, Crossloop has made my life, and subsequently theirs, a whole lot easier!
And now with my favourite geek blog branding on it! What more could a wanna-be HTG ask for?!?!?!
That’s cool! How did you manage? Is it because you’ve got a popular blog and they just agreed it would be a way to get the word out? Did you have to bribe them with pizza & beer for the rest of their lives? Can it be hacked somehow? I’d love to see my own version of Crossloop. It might even impress my clients!
So… tell us… how did you manage to get a customized version?
hey count me in. installed my HTG stamped crossloop already.
sweet.
My problem is that I am a geek who no one wants help from. Sheesh.
Hi. I’ve been using the client for 2 months and I’ve only received 1 request for help. How do you actually make money with this?
I also don’t wish to advertise this on my website.
Thanks for any help =)
I love crossloop, I am one of the top helpers and I have made just over $1,000. Its good to see crossloop reaching out to partner with such great websites such as this one. I would be interested in a customizable crossloop too, just like the one guy said above.
For those who dont know what crossloop is, or what the market place is about. You can learn more on my site at http://www.nicklockard.com
I have helped push crossloop to what it is today by helping a Wall Street Journalist Walter Mossberg with his PC. He loved it so much he published it. So everyone new to crossloop give it time, Geek Squad, Firedog, Plumchoice and other remote service companys days are numbered!!!
Just help my computer illiterate father in-law with his PC using Crossloop and it worked great. Thanks HTG!
i tried to use it only find out that it takes forever to connect even though i have a 10mb cable connection and the other side also has a similar connection. conseqently i decided to stop using the product.
It’s been awhile since an update on here, figured I would list the great news. Firedog services are now officially going out of business. What this means, everyone that used circuit city firedog must now find new tech support.
This is where crossloop’s market place will start to take off. I have watched the helper number grow from 10,000 to now over 15,000 in a very short period of time. That means crossloop is growing, and fast.
Just like I said a few months ago, the big name support companies are going under, one at a time. I can’t wait to watch the overpriced geek squad fail as well.
I use Logmein (free) quite a bit to help friends, family and business associates because I can access their machines unattended. The free version permits commercial use but does not support file transfer.
So, I install Crossloop on each remote pc because it does support file xfer. If I need to xfer files I just run Crossloop on the remote pc and my pc to xfer the files. Quick, easy, legal and no cost.
I Think TeamViewer Is a Better One
