Restore Your Missing/Deleted Smart Bookmarks Folder in Firefox 3
If you’ve started using the beta of Firefox 3, you’ve probably already seen the new Smart Bookmarks folder that is created by default. This folder can be useful for looking up sites you just visited or bookmarked… but how do you get it back if you accidentally deleted it?
Luckily there’s a simple about:config tweak that will restore it, requiring almost no work at all.
In case you aren’t sure what we’re talking about, here’s the default Smart Bookmarks folder, which dynamically shows you the “Most Visited”, “Recently Bookmarked” and “Recent Tags” bookmarks:
Type about:config into the address bar, accept the warning message, and then filter by the following:
browser.places.createdSmartBookmarks

You should see a single entry in the list with a default value of true. Double-click on it to set the value to false, restart Firefox, and your Smart Bookmarks folder is now back:

Nice and simple, just the way it should be.

Thanks Geek!
I actually deleted this folder :-) Now I can restore it.

I’ve been wondering how to get that back! Thanks!
I looked all over for how to do this, thanks for the info.
Thank you very much! My smart folders disapeared when I retrieved my bookmarks with Foxmark. Now it’s back.
Thanks from me too, I did the same as Derwin and could have biten myself! Now I got it back…
Doesn’t work for me, the entry doesn’t exist, and if I add it, it doesn’t do anything.
Using firefox 3 final.
This does work:
1. In the Firefox Address Bar type about:config and press Enter.
2. Find the option that is named browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion.
3. Change the value to 0 by double-clicking on it.
4. Restart Firefox, and you should see the Smart Bookmarks folder located on the Bookmarks Toolbar.
This did not work for me. I changed it from True to False and closed Firefox. I restarted and the smartbookmarks folder is not on the toolbar. I changed from True to false and restarted. Same.
What do you suggest?
@Denis
When I wrote this Firefox 3 was still in beta… it’s likely they changed something. You could try what Simon mentioned as well.
Simon’s solution worked for me…
Thanks
I’ve printed this out just in case, the prob I have is that I sometimes have Folder/Folder/Address in bookmarks with the address across the original Bookmarks list, when I go to click on the address it disappears, any answers ? Thanks, Bryan
I followed Simon’s advice, but to no avail. The bookmarks still exist there is just no toolbar with the designated links/folders of links present. I can go to Bookmarks and scroll down to the bookmarks toolbar file and folders, but I can’t get the toolbar to actually showup.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!
this website is amazing.
This didn’t work for me.
Tried on two systems.
Added
browser.places.createdSmartBookmarks
with Boolean of false
Changed
browser.places.smartBookmarksVersion
to Integer value 0 (it was 2) but on restart it’s back to 2.
I changed it again and restarted firefox, same thing.
Two systems. XP Pro on both.
So no difference. No live bookmarks.
Nope. didn’t work for me either.
browser.places.createdSmartBookmarks did not exist, and creating it did not fix the problem. I guess this solution is no longer valid.
