Geek’s Spam Filter – Updated to Version 0.3

I’ve released another small update to the Geek’s Spam Filter, the WordPress plugin that saves me time every day by deleting the most obvious spam before it goes into the Akismet queue. I used to have to filter through many hundreds of spam comments every day, and now it’s a maximum of 10-20 that get through on a daily basis.

Changelog

  • Changed logic to concat the fields together to reduce processing time
  • Added a number of extra keywords to the list to block more recent spam.

The keyword list is starting to get large, so the next version is going to probably switch to a regex array.

You can get the plugin at it’s download page:

I’ve had some time to evaluate your filter for a while and I can now say with certainty, that it is the perfect compliment to Akismet. It addresses the two most fundamental flaws that the Akismet folks due to laziness, lack of foresight, or apathy refuse to address.

I like that your plugin is so simple and it certainly is effective. Control over the wordlist and link length from the Wordpress interface would be nice, but it still gets the job done. I would also like to see more advanced filtering logic like having the word list automatically adjust based on words in the post (for example, if I’m talking about mortgges in my post, it shouldn’t be a bad word in the filter list anymore).

If I get bored, I might make the modifications myself and let you know, but until then, I wanted you to know that I posted your filter as the second half of the best two plugins to handle spam.

I’m glad it worked for you!

The fight against spam is very important, and I’m glad to help.
