Disable the Annoying “This device can perform faster” Balloon Message in Windows 7
Are you sick of seeing This Device can perform faster balloon message pop up every time you are using an older flash drive or other device? Here we’ll show you what to do to get rid of it once and for all.
You know the message…it pops up when you put in an older USB drive and tells you it can perform faster. Click on the balloon message to see a list of available USB 2.0 ports.
At the bottom of the This Device Can Perform Faster window, uncheck the box Tell me if my device can perform faster then close the window.
That is all there is to it. Now you won’t be annoyed by that message when you’re using an older flash drive or other device.

Good tip. I believe my (very new) HP computer has underpowered USB ports. I know that using a powered USB hub got rid of those messages.
How to remove this annoying balloon in XP?
I did this, but now I’ve changed my mind. I believe I’ve fixed my slow-device issue, but I can’t be sure unless I re-enable this feature. Do you know how to do that?
This fix does not work. Windows 7 resets and checks the box when ever the computer is turned off.
Post is incorrect. Try this:
•Open Device Manager. To do this, click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc in the Run window, and then click OK.
•Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers section at the bottom of the device manager window. Locate and then double-click a host controller that has either the word Universal or the word Open in the title.
•In the properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab, and then select the Don’t tell me about USB errors check box
Blah is correct, that method does stop the pesky message which, by the way, terminates the program that runs my USB modem when it performs that check – most annoying. However, this fix is not permanent. I thought I had it sorted, but after a recent Windows update it came back again. Grrr!
Blah is also wrong.
In my computer the properties dialog does not even have “advanced” tab.
In the recommendation my computer has n check box since all my USB ports are1.1
How to remove this pop up by setting some registry values?
I tried but it needs to restart your computer for changes to take effect.
Can anybody tell me any solution for this problem?
You are exactly WRONG
Actually unchecking this box makes the balloon appear in the tray once you close the window. Clicking on the balloon makes the window appear again, and the option to show it is ticked again. Therefore you are making false claims and this entry should be taken down.
Blah is actually correct…. Read more carefully.
Find the entry that has OPEN or UNIVERSAL somewhere in the title. In my case is was “Standard OpenHCD…”.
Properties on that definitely do have Advanced Tab.

Blah seems to be on-track here.
Running XP.
Start > Control Panel > Systems > Hardware > Device Manager > USB icon (near bottom of stack) > “Universal Host Controller” > Advanced > click “Don’t tell me about about USB errors.”
When I changed the setting, I lost the taskbar for some reason. Restarted the computer without further incident. Taskbar was back, annoying balloon was not.

Im glad to know Im not the only one that complains of this issue. I bought my laptop last year and the techs have done all this to my computer to make it go away and it does go away a little while but comes right back on! My laptop is new, should this be happening if I have nothing plugged in? just curious
Thanks! Hits the spot. Everything I’m running is 2.0 or above. This goofy thing just started after a required software update. Good old Microsoft.
This is one of the top ten most annoying things to come out of Microsoft in a long time! My pc doesn’t even have any legacy (USB1) ports, I run 7 home premium 64bit and get that annoying balloon all the time!

Tim (December 28, 2010 12:03 am) is experiencing exactly what I am. I un-tick the error window, close the error window, but the USB icon in the tooltray re-appears, and clicking on it just brings the dialog box up again with the check box re-ticked. It’s an endless loop!! I’ve got to the stage where I just move the error window as far off the bottom of the screen I can, and forget it.
This doesn’t work. I unchecked that box, and it still pops up and annoys me every day.
