Get the Close Button Back on the Last Open Tab in Firefox

Frustrated and missing the Close Button on the last open tab in the newer releases of Firefox? Now you can have that wonderful Close Button back with the Last Tab Close Button extension.

Before Last Tab Close Button

Anyone using the newer releases of Firefox will notice that the Close Button has disappeared from the tab if it is the only (or last) one open. Right clicking on the tab will also show that the option to close the tab is grayed out. Very frustrating if this is something that you have been using on a daily basis while browsing. Time to fix that little problem!

Note: Right clicking on the tab will show that the close tab option is still grayed out as shown above.

    Another way is:
    – Set browser.tabs.closeWindowWithLastTab to False
    – Add the following Code to UserChrome.css:

    .tabbrowser-tabs[closebuttons=”alltabs”] > .tabbrowser-tab > .tab-close-button {
    display: -moz-box !important;
    }
    .tabbrowser-tabs:not([closebuttons=”noclose”]):not([closebuttons=”closeatend”]) > .tabbrowser-tab[selected=”true”] > .tab-close-button {
    display: -moz-box !important;
    }

    Saves you another extension ;)

    If you’re interested in even more tab options, Tab Mix Plus is a great extension. Unfortunately, the version listed on Mozilla Add-Ons is not compatible with Firefox 3.5.1, but if you do a Google search or look through the reviews, you can find a compatible version from the add-on’s author. I’ve been using it and have not encountered any problems. It also gives you the close button on the last tab as well as the option to right-click on the tab and choose close.

    oh god thank you, I was missing this like a kidney.

  8. Dale

    Am I missing something here? What are you left with when you have no more open tabs? Why not just close the browser?

  9. Steve

    I’m with Dale, why would you want to close a tab if its the only one left?

  10. Computer

    Thanks for the how-to, but I really didn’t use the close button on the tab. I just clicked the close button at the top right corner of the browser.

    It mainly allows you to have a clean browser so that you can minimize the window/hide the application instead of having to launch it continuously after you are done with the last tab at that time.

    I have my FF configured a little differently. In Tools -> Options -> Tabs, I have the option “Always show the tab bar” disabled. So when I get down to the last “tab”, it’s not a tab but the whole window. I also have my home page set to “about:blank”, so I can “close” that last page by clicking the home button (or with Alt+Home for you keyboard ninjas). The result is that the FF window remains open, blank and not pointing to any website.

    I’m not saying this way is better or has any specific advantages — it’s just what I am used to. So I certainly understand the desire to restore a function that was removed if it is one that you used a lot!

    How did you get that colorful background above the tab? It looks nice. It is an add-on? Please do share..

  14. Asian Angel

    @Santo – That background is from using the Personas Extension. ^__^

    To the author:
    Thank you!

    @ Philipp!
    Thank you! It’s a two step process. Modify the about:config and the .css file. I did only step 1 and thought it didn’t work.
