Virtual Box is an awesome software. Good competitor to the VMWare Workstation.
I use this to test them out before installing them to a hard drive. Although sometimes you won't get the exact same speed when you're running in on a real install than when you run it in a virtual machine.

One reason on why the Moon OS will not do a larger resolution is probably due to you not installing the Guest Additions (which is probably impossible due to it being a live distro). This will provide you with additional drivers/modules and programs. One such driver is the xorg video driver, which will allow you to use higher resolutions. Also with more recent versions of Virtual Box they are also supporting 3D acceleration depending on the version of your xserver (needs to be 1.6 or higher).

Another feature of Guest Additions is the shared clipboard. This will allow you to copy stuff from the host and past it into the guest or vice versa. The Guest Additions also provides time sync with the host, so both clocks show the same time.

Guest Additions for linux can be installed by selecting Devices -> Install Guest Additions. This will add the image as /dev/hdc and depending on the distro may auto-mount it. Once it is mounted go into it and run the linux installer (through the shell). Then reboot and it is done.

One last great feature to mention with the Guest Additions, is once in the GUI you no longer have to use the Right Ctrl to release the mouse. The mouse will move in and out of the window just like any other window on your desktop.
