Ask the Readers: What are Your Computer’s Hardware Specs?
Last week we asked you to share if you are a laptop or desktop geek, and many of you shared the type of computer you use. This week we want to know the hardware specifications of your machine(s).
Computer Hardware Specs
Last week we asked Do You Use a Laptop, Desktop, or Both. This week it’s time to share the hardware specifications of your machine(s). If you’re a gamer or do a lot of video processing you probably have a powerful machine with top end hardware. On the other hand, some of us can get by with a basic machine or even a netbook for light word processing, email, and web access. Tell us the computer’s hardware specs like processor speed, amount of memory, hard drive space, and type of video card.
If you’re not sure what’s in your system, we’ve covered some free tools that scan your Windows system and provide a report. Another good tool you might want to try is Speccy.

I have probably the most humble not-a-netbook laptop.
- 15″ 1280×800
- Intel Celeron 540 1.86GHz

- Fanless HD 4550 graphics (I like quiet)

That’s a WEI score of 4.9 btw, limited by the graphics. Otherwise it would be a 5.9. Looking to replace MB, CPU, and RAM with Core i5 soon.

A very aged Compaq Pentium 3 with 512mb PC133 RAM and a 20Gb hdd.
Running Ubuntu (Koala)
Finally I have all the bits (bar PSU) from my old desktop, which I’m planning to turn into a server:
4600X2 Athlon (S939)
4Gb DDR RAM
Asus A8N-E MB
Nvidia 6600GT
Listed like this it does seem a tad like overkill – I just seem to end up adopting old PCs on their way to die and finding vague uses for them. I probably have enough bits and pieces to put another one together on top of all of this. I must stop collecting computers!

My main laptop is nothing special: Sony Vaio, 4 GB RAM, 1536 MB Nvidia graphics, duocore 2.0 GHz Intel T6400, 300 GB hard disk, running Win7.
But my –bedside– laptop never stops amazing people who see it in action. It is a 1998 Toshiba 4000CDT, still proudly sporting the original “designed for Microsoft Windows 98″ sticker. It has 160 MB RAM (originally this was only 64 MB) and a 2 MB graphics card (Chips and Technologies Asiliant 65555). CPU is a 233 MHz Intel Pentium II. Screen: 800×600 px. Storage: 4 GB harddisk, read-only CD drive, and a floppy drive. It has only one USB 1.1 slot, which is used with a hub to connect to internet (as the machine has no usable ethernet port) through an external Icidu WiFi stick (resulting actual connection speed 65,7 Kbyte/sec). The same USB hub also has a 4 GB Icidu memstick attached, that serves as backup for the entire hard disk.
This museum piece works surprisingly well for normal web surfing, even some basic Flash (as long as you keep away from streaming media) and for several other tasks (text editing, image handling etc). That it works so well (and that the desktop looks good) is thanks to carefully chosen software and a little tweaking. The OS is not Linux, as you might expect, but Microsoft’s little-known WinFLP (“Windows for Legacy PCs”, which is a nicely optimized version of XP Professional SP3 designed to run even on 64 MB RAM systems -much better than XP itself, and unlike Ubuntu with good hardware drivers). Browser is Opera 10.50, for many reasons (like its “Fit to Width” button that instantly solves the problem of too-wide webpages). I plan to keep this laptop running for at least until 2020. At that point I hope to enter a competition for the oldest laptop still in daily use.
Sidenote: for a March 1999 review of this very same laptop but with only 32 MB RAM, see http://www.reviewsonline.com/TOSH4000.HTM – the reviewer was really impressed, especially by its huuuuuge disk capacity, saying “it may take me decades to fill up the 4.1-gigabyte hard disk”. How times have changed!

I have a variety of machines, but the one I have the most nostalgia for is my IBM Thinkpad G40. At the time I spent far too much on it, but it has been with me for around 8 years now.

Talking about hardware, I forgot something when writing about my 1998 Toshiba laptop (see above). It still has its original battery, never removed it. Nowadays I never unhook the laptop, too. Maybe someone is curious about the condition of a laptop battery after more than 12 years of use? I can tell it now lasts about 15 minutes of actual use between charges. I guess I should complain to Toshiba about that – I want a new one under warranty!
