Search Engine Optimization, also known as SEO, is a branch of marketing research that focuses on helping websites to appear as high as possible in a search engine’s rankings. The goal, if all goes as planned, is to help a website appear within the first or second page of results provided by a search engine, thus greatly increasing the traffic to, and popularity of, the website in question.
Examples of the strategies used by Search Engine Optimization include: making it as easy as possible for search engines to find and index a website, the use of specific, carefully chosen Meta Tags such as ‘keywords’ and a ‘description’ within the HTML code for the website, targeting multiple kinds of search results at the same time (i.e. images, news, academic, etc.), the use of select keywords placed within the textual part of a website’s pages and the placement (location) of those keywords on said pages, and promoting websites to increase the number of backlinks (a.k.a inbound links).
