what's the best zip file opener?

It's all a matter of perception.
In my case, the 'Best' one is 7zip.
It's Free. It's Open Source. It's compatible with other zip managers.

While I agree with the above recommendation, Zip file opening is built into Windows. There is really no need for additional software, unless you have very specific reasons. Why gum up your computer further with unneeded software?

Well, even in Win 7 the extract does not always perform well, especially with .rar files

I used to have what came with windows, but it disappeared and I don't know how to get it back. then I have had others which I liked and they disappeared. I don't know what's going on. For a while I had one called unzip for windows, but suddenly, it's gone, too. I liked the one that had an icon that looked like a file with a zipper on it, but I can't find it online anymore.

I will try all your recommendations and see what happens. thank you all

I just tried installing these things above and I could not because this error message popped up:

Error writing temporary file. Make sure your temp folder is valid.

Now what do I do?

Sounds like you infected badly with something throwing popups like that.

Click Start button, type cmd in the search box and cmd.exe will appear (hopefully)
Right click on it and choose Run as Administrator
type sfc /scannow and press Enter

I did what you said and this is what came up when it was done:

Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.

Jim, I have already used up both of those trials, but I will uninstall them and try them again and see what happens. I do intend to buy them as soon as I can because they worked really well. I also already have Norton that I get free from Comcast and I have SpeedMaxPC and I use CCleaner. It sure takes a lot of stuff to keep these computers working.

Because all you guys help me so much, I want to do something good for you, too, so I am sending you these links. There is very, very important information in them. From them, you will be able to find more good stuff; and you can also get a lot more information about the subject on YouTube. If any of you live in California, this information is especially important because of Proposition 37. You will understand when you see the videos.
