hello, i recently did a system recovery on my hp slimline with vista. i noticed my computer going to sleep. i've switched to high performance in power settings, but i am not being allowed to create a power plan, cannot change display settings for display shut off. i try to create a power plan or change when the display turns off and get the message "power plan information isn't available". offline help states that power management settings or the registry keys associated with them have been deleted or corrupted. help! i would like to choose when my display turns off, preferably not while watching a movie, a minor inconvenience true, but still irritating.
thanks, morgan

nagrom, hello. HKLM is an abbreviation for HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. You can also do a registry query from the Command Prompt. Go to Start, type "cmd", press enter to open the command prompt window. Copy the following command, paste it into the window, and press Enter:
reg query HKLM\system\currentcontrolset\control\power\powersettings
You got them. Do you mean that you see the 15 registry keys under powersettings? From the command prompt, it starts out like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\power\powersettings\ 0012ee47-9041-4b5d-9b77-535fba8b1442
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\power\powersettings\ E796BDB-100D-47D6-A2D5-F7D2DAA51F51
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\power\powersettings\ 19cbb8fa-5279-450e-9fac-8a3d5fedd0c1
Then 12 more. If you are seeing all of the keys, then try adjusting the power plan now.
hi, i just tried again, same message. i can't imagine how i could've deleted anything. and thanks for the help, i keep getting distractions, so i know this is taking longer than it probably should. i've been getting to the power settings area by going to the screen saver settings and clicking on change power settings, is there another way i should be getting there, maybe?
nagrom, you should take LH up on his kind offer to send you known good registry data. By installing his registry export, it would eliminate the possibility that the registry keys are deleted or corrupted. That will either fix the problem or lead us toward another solution.
There is nothing wrong with going to Power Options from the Screen Saver settings. You can also get there from Control Panel -> Power Options, but it is the same thing.
that sounds like a great idea scott (great scott!,-rocky horror). i'm sure i will need to be walked through it, mister or madam moderator. you have my email address? i've never attempted any thing like this, with the exception of the system restore. i've got to go to my noon aa meeting, i'll be back around three pm(mst). i'm in arizona, no daylight saving here! it's already 90 degrees+ here every day, our warmest may on record i think. talk to you later scott, LH, 'preciate your help.
