(Solved) - xp won't read the original user profile?

during startup, xp didn't go get the original user profile, then the default desktop was loaded.

anyone ever came across this phenomena? how to fix?

how to force xp to read the original user profile?

I think the profile may be damaged but am just guessing from your posting.

Start looking through this search for information concerning how to recover the profile.

already found out the workaround

it is the original profile having gone into a backup (bak) state that caused the profile not loaded

(1) rename the profile carrying the same name to .old;
(2) delete the .bak extension of that .bak profile;
(3) reset the RefCount to 0;
(4) reset the State to 0

it works.
everything is back, much more the intact desktop icon layout !
