Hello all! I hope I'll be able to find a solution here. This will be a fairly lengthy post because I want to make sure I get in all the relevant info.

I've got a really old PC, twelve years in fact. I enjoy creating and using custom msstyles and modifying system files to suit my personal preferences. Therefore I've applied Windows File Protection Switcher and UXTheme Multi-Patcher. I also use Resource Hacker, Replacer and the registry editor quite a bit. I've been at it a few years now and never had any problems I couldn't eventually resolve.

I've tried out things like Logon Studio, BootSkin, Shedko Shutdown and even Window Blinds. It's usually more fun doing myself.

I was using Logon Studio recently but decided I wanted to have a shot at creating my own startup screens from scratch. I did some research and proceeded to modify logonui.exe by editing the UI file and changeing some of the bitmaps. I use regedit instead of Replacer so I could leave the default logonui file alone.

1. Copy your custom login screen file under another name, let’s say logonuiA.exe, to C:\Windows\system32\
2. Open Start menu –> Run –> and type Regedit
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> SOFTWARE –> Microsoft –> Windows NT –> CurrentVersion –> Winlogon and change the value for UIHost to logonuiA.exe.

That's handy too, because you can switch between a number of logonui files without ever replacing the original system file.

I ended up with a startup screen I really like. Works great. But...for some reason I can't figure out, it disables my shutdown at the start menu. I can use the default logonui file with a modifed winlogon.exe, to change some of the text, and it works fine. I can shutdown with no problem. But when I use the custom logonui, it totally disables my shutdown and I have to turn off my PC manually.

I can't figure it out. I've tried all sorts of variations of the custom logonui file and every one disables shutdown.

I don't use the Welcome screen and I don't log on. I'm the only one who uses this old antique so I just use auto logon. I just don't get it! I know the same screens appear behind shutdown but I can't understand why, if it works great with startup, it won't work with shutdown.

I'd really appreciate any insights anyone could provide. I like the screen I've got going and I really DON'T like the XP default.

Thanks in advance!

I don't know, but check out the reg entries below, and see if the values are being changed,

Thank you Lighthouse! Thank you!!!

The registry fix @ dreadbob.blogspot did the trick!

Sorry it's been so long but I just found your reply yesterday. I don't know how or why, but I never got an email notification. So, for the whole month since you posted, I've been tearing my hair out trying to solve this issue. I even did a clean re-install of XP and when I tried reactivating Logon Studio...THE SAME THING HAPPENED!!!

I was searching for a solution with the same keywords again and it brought me back to my own post here, which I had completely forgotten about, and your answer!

As it turns out, the "NoClose" Dword value didn't even exist at either of the registry locations dreadbob sited. At the first one, the Explorer key was there but not the Dword. At the second one, the Explorer key wasn't even there! So, once I added the key and Dwords with the values set to 0, NO PROBLEM! Everything works like a charm!

I copied dreadbob's tweak to a txt file and saved it on my drive. I even printed it out so I've got a hard copy in case my system ever crashes fatally. I'll never have to worry about that problem again!

Thank you most sincerely. You really made my day!

Just an added note: This forum does not do email notifications. You just have to check back regularly.
