Hello all! I hope I'll be able to find a solution here. This will be a fairly lengthy post because I want to make sure I get in all the relevant info.
I've got a really old PC, twelve years in fact. I enjoy creating and using custom msstyles and modifying system files to suit my personal preferences. Therefore I've applied Windows File Protection Switcher and UXTheme Multi-Patcher. I also use Resource Hacker, Replacer and the registry editor quite a bit. I've been at it a few years now and never had any problems I couldn't eventually resolve.
I've tried out things like Logon Studio, BootSkin, Shedko Shutdown and even Window Blinds. It's usually more fun doing myself.
I was using Logon Studio recently but decided I wanted to have a shot at creating my own startup screens from scratch. I did some research and proceeded to modify logonui.exe by editing the UI file and changeing some of the bitmaps. I use regedit instead of Replacer so I could leave the default logonui file alone.
1. Copy your custom login screen file under another name, let’s say logonuiA.exe, to C:\Windows\system32\
2. Open Start menu –> Run –> and type Regedit
3. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE –> SOFTWARE –> Microsoft –> Windows NT –> CurrentVersion –> Winlogon and change the value for UIHost to logonuiA.exe.
That's handy too, because you can switch between a number of logonui files without ever replacing the original system file.
I ended up with a startup screen I really like. Works great. But...for some reason I can't figure out, it disables my shutdown at the start menu. I can use the default logonui file with a modifed winlogon.exe, to change some of the text, and it works fine. I can shutdown with no problem. But when I use the custom logonui, it totally disables my shutdown and I have to turn off my PC manually.
I can't figure it out. I've tried all sorts of variations of the custom logonui file and every one disables shutdown.
I don't use the Welcome screen and I don't log on. I'm the only one who uses this old antique so I just use auto logon. I just don't get it! I know the same screens appear behind shutdown but I can't understand why, if it works great with startup, it won't work with shutdown.
I'd really appreciate any insights anyone could provide. I like the screen I've got going and I really DON'T like the XP default.
Thanks in advance!
