xp network problem
(23 posts)First are you connecting with a network cable or over wireless?
If it's a network cable then you just need to connect the computer to the router with it and Windows XP will automatically talk to it.
If it's wireless then do you have a wireless card in your computer to access it?
This reply is not to offer computernerd advice, but to comment on this forums tremendously patient and understanding members.
It is for this reason that I post inquiries here, and not being subjected to rude and condescending comments that I have experienced in other forums.
Outstanding efforts everyone, including you jd2066 !
@Computernerd, if your PC has no WiFi capability the only way to connect to the router is with an Ethernet cable. Routers usually allow several PC's to connect by cable - in that they are like a switch.
If the question is how to setup the router, go with what taybay said.
@kilinikaau, your comment was awfully nice. Thank you
I just searched online and http://forum.notebookreview.co.....p?t=206390
Unfortunately, that topic doesn't have an answer either.
You can try installing the driver manually without the setup program and see if it works.
You just need to go to Device Manager and update your Ethernet Controller to use the driver files in C:\swsetup\SP36684A.
I will post instructions on that later when I get my Windows XP virtual machine up.
Edit:
Instructions for updating the driver manually:
1. Click the start button.
2. Right click on "My Computer" and click Manage.
3. Click Device Manager on the left.
4. Double click "Network Adapters".
5. Right click on the adapter entry and click "Update Driver...". If there is more then one entry reply back with all the entries listed and I will post which to select.
6. Select "No, no this time" and click next.
7. Select "Install from a list or specific location". and click next.
8. Check "Include this location in the search".
9. Click "Browse" and browse to the location of the driver. Driver is probably in C:\swsetup\SP36684A.
10. Click ok.
11. Click next.
12. Windows should find and install the driver.
13. Click finish.
For that manually update like I listed above you would select the "broadcom 802.11b/g wlan" entry though since it's not labeled "Ethernet Controller" that could mean the driver already got installed just fine.
Try double clicking on the "broadcom 802.11b/g wlan" entry and see if the status says "This device is working properly."
If so go to Control Panel -> Network and Internet Connections -> Network Connections and look for a wireless connection entry. Then if you see that right click on it and click View Wireless Networks.
