I have Windows 7 Ultimate with XP mode; do I need to get anti-virus for it or will the avast I have on Windows 7 protect it?
If I need anti-virus for the XP mode does it have to be avast or could I just get Microsoft's free anti-virus?

If you are already running avast, then continue with avast and don't run MS security essentials.

Do NOT run more than ONE AV at a time.

ONE Good AV should handled the Complete System / Machine no matter how it's being used.

Your main AV will handle anything on your machine but XP mode won't recognise it and so you will be nagged to install one. There's no harm in installing one within XP mode, MSE is as good as any and when installing it won't recognise your main AV either which goes to show that it is a totally independent system. Or you can simply turn off the security warnings in Security Center.
