I have an XBOX 360 pro, meaning supposedly 20 gigs of hard drive space.

For some reason, my dashboard only finds about 11 gigs of available space.

Any idea where the rest of my space is?

Well you lose 1.4GB to marketing, the rest is probably the operating system.

That's correct. The Xbox 360 reserves about 6 GB for it's own use and the preloaded videos and game demos take more. Out of the box, MS calls it 14 GB available:

That is odd. I am not surprised, but at the same time I figured if an Xbox 360 can run without a HDD (Core) then why does the software it uses for itself take up so much space? I have never used a Core though, so I don't know how "dumbed-down" it is.

Anyway, thanks guys.
