In Word 2007 the cursor, whether moved by keyboard or mouse, disappears when it comes to italic text, and does not reappear until placed in non-italic text.

I noticed this issue also, but I believe it may be font-dependent. I'm seeing the problem (no italic cursor) inside Adobe Garamond Pro (Italic) but the cursor shows up fine in the same document if I format the text with Calibri (Italic [oblique]).

Note that while both are OpenType fonts, Adobe Garamond Pro uses PostScript outlines and Calibri uses TrueType outlines. If you go to the font control panel and preview a font, the sort of outlines your font is using should be displayed at the top. Could you check the font you're using and see whether it's PostScript or TrueType?

I also noticed that the problem was in evidence only at the 90% scale the document opened to by default (for some unknown reason; it's letter size on a 1600x1200 pixels screen, so there's plenty of room). When I changed the zoom, I found that the cursor disappeared only at 60% and 90% zoom. Can you try changing the zoom and see what happens for you?
