Winzip on Vista?

On my last computer, I remember I'd downloaded Winzip for free, and whenever I wanted to download a font, Winzip would automatically come on and extract it (I think that's the term)
Well, now that I have this new computer (running on Vista), most of my fonts aren't here, and I'm having to find and download them. But, since I don't have an unzipping program, I installed winzip 12.0 by way of their 45 day free trial. It was so difficult to understand, that I couldn't figure out how to do the simple task I wanted to do. So, I uninstalled.
Anyone know of either an easier-to-use/understand program that would help me?
or
Anyone want to tackle "winzip for dummies" so I can understand how to unzip the fonts I want on my computer?

Thank you!!

I'm on my winzip free trial as well. I think I will buy it because it is easier than unzip with vista - sorry, whs, not super easy.

jakade, I didn't have my fonts with vista either, but I didn't need a zip file to restore them. If I understand you correctly, you might find this easier:

Oz, I'm very interested in hearing about this free 7zip! Got a link?

ZipGenius and IZarc are free archive utilities with friendly user interfaces and support for many different archive formats. The interface to 7-zip is not as pretty or friendly as the previous two, but it's still better than what is built in to Windows. All of these are freeware! If someone can justify the price of WinZip, I would like to hear how.

Thanks ScottW, that's what I'm looking for! I don't ever remember having to pay for winzip, I only downloaded it because I had to open 2 files that vista wouldn't open.

Can somebody help me. Where is the problem? I have never (and I mean NEVER) done more than 1 click on "Extract all Files" to unzip a .zip folder. And it has always worked. What am I missing?

That's the easy part. What do you do when you try to extract and "Internet Explorer has stopped working" pops up. That's every time for two of my subcontractors files. Then there's the one file that says "files is corrupted", it's not. All I know is winzip opens everything, every time, no problems.

I guess I was lucky in the past. I never had such a mess.

whs, it's true that the most common operation is to extract files from a .zip file and for that, Windows Explorer is sufficient. However, I use ZipGenius when I need or want to do operations that Explorer can't do. Extract from an archive that is not a ZIP (e.g., RAR); preview any one or several files inside of an archive without extracting it; examine a self-extracting archive (.exe file) without running potentially harmful code; unzip files "flat" without the directory structure; and so on. Still, it's rare that I need one of these tools which is why I could never justify paying for one.

ScottW, thanks again. I rarely need third party software either. I've got a couple of new hot shot subs who uses, I don't even know what, but I have to open their files anyway:) If ZipGenius works for you, that's good enough for me!

ScottW, thanks for the details. As you said, in a straight forward operation, the basic facilities will do.

okay, guys, I'm still confused - which is easy?
PS - techgranny, I'm not restoring - all my fonts were lost when my computer died, so I'm having to re-find them on the internet and download each one.

whs - (I don't use internet explorer)

I'm sorry for asking such simple questions, but I really don't understand computers very well. Thank you for your patience with me!

jakade, I think we were talking about Windows Explorer - not Internet Explorer. PS: If you still have a restore point from the time your fonts were still on the system, we can recover them from there. You can check the restore point situation with Command Prompt (open as administrator), type VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWS, that will list all your restore points (shadows). They are dated. If there is one you think may have your fonts, we can go get them. But if there are no suitable restore points (e.g. because you did a reinstall), then you have to do it the hard way.
Btw: We have all the patience in the world!

You learn something new everyday...I thought windows explorer WAS internet explorer! sheesh!

Warning: another really dumb question: What is Command Prompt and how do I open it as an administrator?

I think I'm probably out of lucky, since I'm on a new computer, and the only thing I have left from my old one was all my old documents and photos. I didn't realize the font issue till I got into my docs and saw they'd reverted back to Verona or arial. ick! (I do a lot of paper craft stuff, so this was a pretty bad hit for me)

jakade, I can't help you with the other stuff, but granny knows fonts. I didn't lose all my fonts, only the ones I use:) I had to track them down on the internet and download them one by one. The link I posted is where I found all of them! (helps to know the names of the fonts you use)

jakade, For Command Prompt: Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt > Right click on "Command Prompt" > Open as Administrator > The type VSSADMIN LIST SHADOWS - that will show you the restore points (shadows). Do this asap because the shadowstoragespace is being reused by newer shadows when it is full and your old shadows may disappear - which means you may not find one from where you can recover your fonts. If you find a suitable restore point, download Shadow Explorer with which you can recover the fonts. I had written this procedure which tells you how to recover your files. (Note: It was written for an earlier version of Shadow Explorer - the current version is a little different but I think you will be able to manage). Your fonts are in C:\Windows\Fonts - good luck.
